There won’t be much of a reason, unfortunately. Mediocrity will be rewarded. 8-4 in big ten or sec will be good enough for certain teams. “We’ll get bigger matchups in reg season” will be a rallying cry, but the result won’t mean much in the end.

Iowa beat Michigan on a last-second touchdown? Doesn’t matter! Michigan could still lose 3 more times and be fine.
LSU lost a pivotal, heated matchup with Ole Miss? Tough for Kiffin, but they can still lose 3 more times and it doesn’t matter at all!
USC lost by 14 at home to Oregon and never wins notable games? Doesn’t matter! They’re in at 8-4!
Ohio State blew a 20-point 4th quarter lead and lost to Texas? Who cares! They can still probably lose 4 more times and get in as the 24-seed.
Regular season goes out the window with this horrific 24-team format.
