As an Iranian who has always studied Israel history and culture, I know where this demand comes from.
I understand the deep-rooted Jewish value of Achrayut (אחריות), the sacred duty of a leader to bear responsibility. But in Jewish tradition, the absolute highest responsibility is the preservation of life and the survival of the nation: Pikuach Nefesh (פיקוח נפש). True accountability in the middle of a storm doesn't mean jumping off the ship to appease your critics; it means standing at the wheel until the ship reaches the shore safely.
First: Golda Meir stepped down only after the guns fell silent, the Egyptian and Syrian armies had been pushed back, and the immediate war had been won.
