This might be the coolest post for my own personal hitting philosophy I’ve ever seen.
Some years ago, maybe 2016? I can’t recall what year but I looked at all pitches thrown to RHH. What I found is that the majority of the time the pitch is located middle to middle away. I can’t recall the percentages.
So basically middle of plate to outside. Either balls or strikes up or down.
But still my point, as in your post, is that if we are playing probabilities, then having a swing path and approach that matches with where the majority of pitches are thrown in a major league game will give you a huge edge.
I’d be interested to see what the current era’s pitch location percentages are if anyone wants to look that up for me.
All pitches not just one type.
@IE_MLB can you make this happen for me?
The Brewers are the ultimate OUTLIER
When I was diving in on the game and pitching matchup yesterday I found this. This is a statistic of the average degree of the barrel of the bat at contact point for each team.
Everything to the left is pull side contact point. Everything to the right is opposite field contact point.
29 of the 30 teams are to the pull side.
There’s just one to the opposite field. The Milwaukee Brewers.
This is wild to me. And speaks volumes to their team approach. It means the ball is traveling deeper which has a ripple effect on everything else you’re trying to do as a hitter.
It allows you to recognize off speed for a split second longer. Spit on pitches down and away. Keep pitches fair that you’re normally pulling foul. Foul line to foul line approach.
The team with the best record in all of baseball is the ONLY team doing something. And they’re not even particularly close to any other teams. That’s pretty eye opening.
Also shoutout Twins. Turn and burn, baby.

If a hitter has a steep path, he might need to feel like he is swinging up to match pitch plane. If a hitter is “collapsing the back side” (old school terminology) he might need to think and feel like he is swinging down to get on plane!
There isn’t one path, name of the game is to match plane and create room for error.

I don’t have all the answers but I love baseball because of the ups and downs and constant grind. So here’s some thoughts for the “X hitting” war that is going on right now.

The Brewers have their first baserunner of the game after a 2-out double from Yelich.
Hedgie!!!!
That one’s not coming back! Ethan Hedges clobbers a two-run shot to extend Spokane’s lead over the Frogs. #GoSpo

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.

STATEMENT FROM THE NEW YORK YANKEES:
“The New York Yankees mourn the passing of Tommy John, who was a bedrock of our rotation during his time in pinstripes and a longtime favorite of Yankees fans. While his incredible longevity and post-surgery achievements changed the fortunes and trajectory of countless athletes around the world, it also overshadowed his excellence as a pitcher, which included consecutive 20‑win seasons with the Yankees. We pause to remember the totality of his legacy — his competitiveness and skill, his penchant for conversation, his kind and gracious nature, and his stature as an athletic and medical pioneer. The Yankees extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, including wife, Cheryl, daughter, Tamara, and sons Tommy III and Travis. We also keep his son Taylor in our hearts.”
