Can we please stop pretending that a movie making its production budget back at the box office means it's already profitable? Because that's not how this shit works.
CLAYFACE opened to roughly $43 MILLION worldwide against a reported $44 million production budget. Sounds great, right? Except $24.5 million of that came domestically, and theaters keep a percentage of ticket sales. Using the standard 50/50 estimate, Warner Bros. would see around $12.25 million. Add in the $19 million overseas, where studios generally receive a smaller percentage, and you're looking at roughly $20 million coming back to the distributor before expenses.
And that's before we even discuss marketing, which wasn't included in the reported budget. The movie also benefited from filming in the UK, where tax incentives can help reduce production costs. But those incentives don't magically mean the film is already profitable.
Now, CLAYFACE could absolutely become a financial success. It's got a manageable budget, positive audience reactions, Halloween coming up, and eventually digital and streaming revenue. There's a legitimate path forward here.
But people declaring victory because the worldwide gross nearly matches the production budget are skipping a pretty important part of the equation.
Box office gross is NOT studio revenue.
And profitability isn't determined by whichever number makes your favorite franchise look better.

I tried to warn all of the James Gunn fans that were attacking me for my reviews this was would be the case. #Clayface is actually a bigger flop than #Morbius.
I have inside information that if #Superman: Man of Tomorrow flops, Skydance will go back to the #Snyderverse
Clay didn't slay.
WB's CLAYFACE is the #1 movie in North America w/ a debut of $24M, but the DC brand itself is in a freefall.
You know what really sucks: even MORBIUS opened with $39M.

Alright Grace.... Hit em with some knowledge
"If DC Studios doesn't start making some money and charting, Ellison will likely bring in some new but old school blood to run DC studios"
Anyone saying #clayface "made its (44M+?) budget back" off of a 43M global return is an IDIOT and doesn't know how box office works and should just avoid speaking on box office going forward
This is truly embarrassing as a lifelong dc fan that we have so many unknowledgeable larpers among us
Wait” someone actually told the truth!! 😳
“Clayface” arrived on the lower end of the studio’s expectations of $25 million to $35 million.
The antihero adaptation earned another $19 million overseas for a global tally of $43 million.

For all the people who sent me abuse (and continue to do so) for my review, I guess #Clayface really is DC’s Morbius, after all, huh? 🤷🏻♂️

CLAYFACE’ has opened with $43M worldwide.
Budget was $44M. Unfortunately with it’s small international numbers and domestic market it will still fall short of it’s efforts to make a profit at $80 to $100 million!
