Markets are a mechanism for calculation, not a source of moral authority.
I think it is up to each of us to work towards being devoted spouses, grateful children, loving parents, and dear friends who are true to our word, who stand resolute against evil yet forgive those who wrong us, and who lift the spirits of all we meet with kind words and an open heart.
That is, markets can enable us to live good lives, but they won't do the living for us—and they can't supply the good.
Jk: that wasn’t the whole day. There was:
- “Let’s stop being Michael Jackson; we’re all taking the reading assessment on our computers.”
- “Stop saying ‘hee hee’. Let’s lock in.”
- “Why are we moonwalking again when we’re supposed to be in our seats?”
- “I understand you don’t want to sit here by ‘my’ desk. But you need to show you can sit.”

My day today:
- “Your cat costume did really cute”
- “Is it a good choice to take off the tail and hit classmates w it?”
- “yes, I’ll ask her not to hit you w her tail (again)”
- “oh, your tail is ripped? I’ll try to get thread from nurse & sew it up over lunch”
- “boys, X lost her tail at recess; can my 3 fastest runners help scour the playground to find it as we march inside?”

Had a conversation w my (adult) daughter about lack of awareness about some issues related to women’s health. I suggested that the problem was women not sending unsolicited photos of their uteruses to people they barely know as an ice breaker. Cmon, have some pride in yourself!

So, basically, 500 million Europeans expect 300 million Americans to protect them from 120 million Russians who can’t even defeat 40 million Ukrainians while those 500 million Europeans don’t even realize they are being conquered by 2 billion Muslims who claim they are being persecuted by 8 million Israelis. Is that about right?

You guys, I have not been as invested in a project as much as I am in this bob ross chia pet for a long time.
His fro appears to be germinating.
It’s important to have a positive vision, but remember that “Climate Collapse” is precisely as real as “Overpopulation”, the non-crisis that plagued the anxious minds of the past generation.
It’s always a temptation, especially for the intelligent, to oversimplify solutions one does not have to implement. The dream of abundant, free wind and solar is pleasant, but is not realistic for our needs. Consider that the historic fear of nuclear power may be over, blown based on recent technological advancements.
My point is not that we should try Nothing. Rather, my point is that the answers that seem obvious even to intelligent amateurs often have subtle defects. Government-imposed family limits seemed wise to communist China, and to western elites who dreamed of a similar level of control. The demographic collapse they caused is a nightmare for China today.
Some politicians and others believe themselves much wiser than the “stupid markets” which allow multiple brands of mustard, but it wasn’t a government committee that created the success of, say, SpaceX. People like Robert Reich believe we shouldn’t allow such power in private hands, but his hands created no such power. The miracle of ubiquitous broadband wouldn’t exist without the Intelligence that markets harness.
Overheard in the hallway: “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit!”
It’s good that the classics never go out of style.

A Holiday Party day is a terrible time to be a sub for 3rd graders with unmedicated ADHD students. I spent lunch time repairing torn costumes. Then, had to explain multiple times that it’s not nice to kick others in the balls.
Thank you to all our friends for your kindness, support, and prayers. Both Mrs and Kid1 received offers for employment this week so our family era of austerity may soon come to an end. ❤️🫂
Saw a new neurology PA yesterday. I mentioned how my balance issues seem worse and I stumble a bit. I had to quite firmly, repeatedly explain that she should not send a social worker to my home. They would not be given leave to enter. 😬
I’m back in Grade 3. Today we have a holiday party! (I told the class that their teacher—a young lady—dressed up as an old man for today. They didn’t laugh.)

Recency Bias in the TikTok algorithm in insane! My entire feed is just “Why would I deceive you? There’s no…there’s no reason for me to do that.”
I can see only You Can See Everything.
I hate how, when one criticizes the readily apparent bad outcomes we see from this approach to math instruction, one is dismissed as a crank/ conspiracy theorist who can't understand the enlightened goals they have for future students.
It is not working and needs correction.
You may know Holly Math Nerd, a great person.
She wrote an article On Common Core Mathematics that captures a lot of my thinking about (and disappointment with) how young people are taught math today.
> "structure doesn’t prevent mathematical insight. It makes room for it".
It breaks my heart when I work with bright kids in 5th–6th grade (or higher) who still count on their fingers or use a chart to look up the products of single-digit numbers. It's too widespread to believe these are outliers. 😢

How can @MIT and President Kornbluth sit back and allow Kristin Knouse to remain on the MIT faculty when she has been found by a jury of her peers to have falsely accused him of rape, and intentionally destroyed his life and career with the help of co-conspirators in the MIT administration?
How does this not violate MIT’s code of conduct?
How can one continue to trust the research she produces?
Why has MIT not immediately launched a formal investigation to reconsider the removal of @DMSabatini’s tenure and Knouse’s continued inclusion on the faculty?
The evidence from the case is now in the public record. It is a straightforward process for MIT to review the facts.
Justice must be served.

The most amazing thing about this drug is how no one brought up "Won't people just call it 'retardatide'?" [Yes, yes they will.]
i don't think people realize just how revolutionary retatrutide is
so far, clinical trials have shown:
- up to 25–28% bodyweight loss in 80 weeks, basically - approaching bariatric surgery results without the surgery
- reduction of knee arthritis pain by ~70% in some patients
- sleep apnea going into remission or becoming mild in up to half of patients
- up to 93% of prediabetics returning to normal blood sugar levels
- lowers blood pressure
- lowers triglycerides by up to 41%
-lowers non-HDL cholesterol by ~16–20%
- reduces inflammatory markers by over 50%
- reduces liver fat by up to 86%, with up to 93% of patients in some groups returning to normal liver fat levels
plus all the benefits that come from simply losing weight
and now they're testing its effects on chronic back pain, cardiovascular disease, kidney outcomes and more
there's now a single drug that can make people lose a quarter of their bodyweight while improving or potentially reversing many of the most common chronic conditions that plague hundreds of millions of people. insane
and it's still in clinical trials, imagine what decades of improved metabolic health could mean for human health and longevity
literally a miracle drug
