Hundreds of thousands of Americans in Puerto Rico have been under a water rationing schedule for more than two weeks due to the drought. But the story is far broader and more complicated than that.
📍The Governor of Puerto Rico declared a local state of emergency on July 31, activating the Puerto Rico National Guard to help distribute water. FEMA deployed water tankers.
📍After spending a few days in San Juan, we are hearing from Puerto Ricans that the problem is broader, has persisted longer, and is also due to aging infrastructure and lack of maintenance. The governor herself cited decades of lack of maintenance in an executive order she issued last year.
📍We met people who have not had consistent water service for 14 months. The elderly are having to refill jugs of water for use at home. A café on a popular street has not had water for at least 137 days this year.
📍There’s a push by the Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner to the US House for the governor to request a federal disaster declaration from President Donald Trump. The effort is backed by 25 Democrats.
📍We have reached out to the Governor of Puerto Rico for comment on the request for a disaster declaration and on the overall findings of our story, but we have not heard back.
