Shocking decision from the government to approve a data centre over desperately-needed social housing.
31,000 people in Tower Hamlets are on the waitlist for council flats. This centre will do nothing for them, except consume an immense amount of water and energy. Appalling.
Last week, the government approved plans for the construction of the London Data Centre there, a 5,200 square metre server farm designed to speed up trades at nearby City banks.
Evan Moffitt explores how community groups are outraged as the government overruled council objections to approve the new server farm instead of more housing.

DATA CENTRES PRIORITISED FOR WATER OVER COMMUNITIES BY LABOUR?
A drought, a data centre, and a Labour group with serious questions to answer.
Why are data centres being prioritised while communities face housing shortages and growing pressure on water resources?

At the public inquiry, the @SaveBrickLane Coalition showed the old Truman Brewery site could hold over 300 social homes.
It got six.
That's not a housing policy. That's a rounding error with a press release attached.

On 20 July, the new PM called for a new generation of council houses.
Nine days later, his Secretary of State approved a scheme on Brick Lane with SIX social homes.
Tower Hamlets has 20,000+ households on the waiting list.

What if one of the most effective climate actions is not to build something new, but to care for what already exists?
Historic and period buildings contain generations of invested materials, energy and skilled labour. Repairing windows, roofs, masonry and plaster—and adapting whole buildings for continued use—can reduce demolition, material extraction and demand for fossil-fuel-based products.
Our latest article examines why restore before replace should be central to climate-conscious building conservation, with practical examples from specialists listed on ConserveConnect.

✍️We've written to Housing Secretary @AngelaRayner asking her to prioritise reuse over demolition to create thousands of homes and jobs. @historicengland estimate 670k homes could be created by repurposing historic buildings. Let's unlock the potential of England’s housing stock

Following objections from the Society, and local residents, the Denmark Arms in East Ham will not be turned into a mini-casino. The pub is a fine, remarkably intact example of a late-Victorian public house. 🧵

Liverpool Street Station is about to be reshaped for decades yet the public is being offered minutes to object.
On 10 February 2026, the City of London Corporation’s Planning Applications Sub-Committee considers application 25/00494/FULEIA: a phased redevelopment of Liverpool Street Station and surrounding sites, including partial demolition, major concourse and structural alterations, and an over-station commercial building reaching 97.67m AOD.
What matters is not only what is proposed but how the public is permitted to respond.

New on ConserveConnect.com: Buildings Left to Rot - Heritage Protection, Financialisation and the UK’s Crisis of Stewardship.
conserveconnect.com/blogs/bu… #Heritage #Conservation #BuiltHeritage #Planning #UK #Retrofit
Why UK period buildings are increasingly lost through two quieter routes: authorised erosion (strip-out framed as “refurbishment”) and abandonment (neglect until loss seems “inevitable”) and how financialisation, viability-led governance, skills gaps and retrofit pressures intensify the crisis.

Brick Lane isn’t “being regenerated”. It’s being rendered legible to capital.
Our new long-read pulls together the full Truman Brewery Public Inquiry series to show how:
- “digital need” becomes a financial strategy
- heritage becomes a branding substrate
- consultation becomes procedure without power
- daylight metrics become a proxy for who gets to remain
Through Harvey, Aalbers, Christophers & Wacquant, we trace the core logic of the appeal—and what it says about planning democracy in the UK.

A disaster foretold by @BarbaraWeissArc "The horror in respect of what has already been destroyed of London’s singular identity and proud spirit is felt very deeply and personally by many Londoners, akin to the sense of loss we collectively feel for the daily erosion of animal and plant species, the disappearance of natural habitats and landscapes, or of once-rich languages and traditions. These losses are forever."
