“Don’t Speak” is from No Doubt’s 1995 album Tragic Kingdom. Gwen Stefani wrote the lyrics about the painful end of her seven-year relationship with bassist Tony Kanal. She initially struggled with releasing such a personal song, but it became the band’s biggest hit. It spent 16 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. Because it was never released as a commercial single in the United States, it was ineligible to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 under Billboard’s rules at the time. The song was originally written as a more upbeat love song and was rewritten after the breakup.

“Last Nite” is from The Strokes’ 2001 debut album Is This It. Written by Julian Casablancas, the song’s raw garage-rock energy and distinctive vocals helped fuel the early-2000s rock revival. It reached No. 14 on the UK Singles Chart but did not enter the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s opening guitar riff closely resembles Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “American Girl.” When listeners pointed out the similarity, Casablancas simply replied “Yeah, we ripped it off.”
