Today marks the 87th anniversary of the Battle of the Overpass, an attack by Ford Motor Company against the UAW on May 26, 1937, at the River Rouge complex in Dearborn, Michigan. Writes Curtis Hansen: "The 'Battle of the Overpass' is one of the most famous events in the history of the American labor movement. The national attention garnered by the photographs and the subsequent hearings provided damning evidence of the methods utilized by Ford and other companies to fight unionism. This victory in the public consciousness was vital to further advances by organized labor." reuther.wayne.edu/ex/exhibit…

Have you heard about the UAW's Flying Squadrons? These were groups of militant UAW unionists ready to help their fellow unionists go on strike at a moment's notice. Watch the @UAW_Archivist Gavin Strassel explain. #UnionDrip #Solidarity #StandUpUAW

The UAW made many attempts to protect the environment, including being an early supporter of the proposed Earth Day. Reuther made speeches at campus teach-ins as a precursor to the holiday and the UAW made an initial donation of $2,000 to the Earth Day cause. Happy Earth Day!
