While Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom had an affair with his best friend's wife. There was more to that scandal than most people know. It's really a testament to how corrupt California politics is that the scandal did not end Newsom's career.
Alex Tourk was Newsom's longtime friend and campaign manager. Tourk became Newsom's Deputy Chief of Staff after Newsom took office as Mayor in 2004. Shortly after Newsom took office, Tourk's wife (known as Ruby Rippey-Tourk back then) was given a job as "Appointments Secretary" in the Mayor's office. It is unclear if she got that job because of her husband or because of Newsom. She kept the job until the summer/fall of 2006. Newsom's affair with her was alleged to have started in 2005 but it may have started earlier.
Mayor Newsom's mistress was not only his friend's wife, she was also his subordinate. The affair was apparently an open secret to many in the Mayor's office. Unfortunately for the husband he somehow didn't know until she admitted it to him later on. Love is blind.
Here's the part of the scandal that most politicians would not have been able to survive. After the affair became public, it became clear that Newsom's mistress/secretary had received benefits that she did not qualify for while she worked for Newsom. Most of the unearned benefits revolved around her getting paid for time not spent working.
During her tenure she missed work over 20% of the time and yet still kept her job and still got paid. There was a nine month stretch during which she never worked even one full week during the entire nine months. She exceeded her PTO amount but kept taking PTO and kept getting paid for it.
Here's the big one. Gavin's former mistress/secretary also took almost three months off under the city's Catastrophic Illness Program. She was approved and paid for the time off even though her "illness" absolutely did not qualify for the program. Her illness? Alcoholism. No city employee in San Francisco had ever been approved for paid leave through the Catastrophic Illness Program for drug/alcohol related issues. The program was for life threatening illnesses such as advanced stage cancer. Ruby Rippey-Tourk claimed she was an alcoholic, took ten weeks off, and got paid for it by the city. Newsom's mistress was the only person to get that paid time off granted just for claiming to be an alcoholic. It was rumored at the time of her leave that she was pregnant with Newsom's child.
Because it was San Francisco and because Newsom was a popular up and coming Democrat politician who had the support of Bill Clinton, there was never a serious investigation into any of it.
After the affair became public, Alex Tourk quit his job. Newsom announced that he would be paying Tourk's monthly salary until Tourk found a new job. Newsom ended up using campaign funds to pay off Tourk, not personal money.
Newsom was dating his current wife (Jennifer Siebel) when the scandal became public. Siebel defended Newsom, bashed Ruby Rippey-Tourk as the "culprit" and then reached out to Harvey Weinstein (whom she had previously slept with) for advice on how Gavin should handle the media. Today Siebel claims she is a fighter for women.
After the affair became public, Gavin claimed that he too had alcohol problems and was going to rehab. He publicly announced that he had entered an outpatient rehab program. He was re-elected for Mayor later that year. During his run for Governor in 2018, Newsom began completely denying ever going to rehab or even ever having a problem with alcohol. In 2018 he was probably already starting to clean up his past in preparation for a future Presidential run.
The West must very soon recognize that:
1) All immigrants are not equally likely to assimilate;
2) All immigrants are not equally likely to be a net benefit to the host society;
3) All immigrants are not equally likely to be a net existential danger to the host society;
4) All cultures are not equal;
5) All religions are not equal;
6) A religion that seeks to destroy your society, civilization, religious heritage, and freedoms should not receive protection under the First Amendment;
7) You don't owe it to said religion to capitulate in the name of tolerance, compassion, and suicidal empathy;
8) Our freedoms and liberties are being used to erase our existence.
It is time to wake up. Every day that passes without the necessary auto-corrections is ensuring that our children and their children will live in a world that is astoundingly darker than anything that the West has ever known.
Have a great week.
I’m speechless! A ‘new bill’ that mandates propaganda. I despise these far left ‘democrats’!
Virginia Democrats have not wasted time in moving the state to the far left after taking control with Gov. Spanberger. A new bill requires teachers to describe Jan. 6th as "an insurrection" and bar descriptions of peaceful protests or election fraud... lis.virginia.gov/bill-detail…

Yesterday, I explained how seven insurance firms in London shut down one-fifth of the world's oil supply.
Today, Trump may have just made the most aggressive sovereign insurance play in modern history.
Here's what happened and why it matters:
Trump ordered the U.S. Development Finance Corporation to immediately offer political risk insurance and guarantees to all maritime trade through the Gulf. Especially energy. Backed by Navy escorts if needed.
Read that through the lens of what I described yesterday.
The Strait didn't close because of missiles. It closed because the insurance market collapsed. P&I clubs pulled coverage, reinsurers withdrew, and the entire commercial shipping architecture froze.
This move doesn't address the military problem. It addresses the actuarial one.
The DFC is stepping into the void that Lloyd's and the London reinsurance market created when they pulled out. The U.S. government is effectively saying: we will underwrite what the private market won't.
No sovereign has attempted to replace the global marine war risk market in real time during an active conflict. Here's why the structural implications are significant:
1. It challenges Lloyd's dominance.
For centuries, London has been the center of gravity for marine insurance. Lloyd's and its reinsurers controlled pricing, terms, and risk appetite for global shipping.
That concentration is exactly what made the actuarial blockade possible. A handful of firms in one city froze global oil flows.
The DFC offering competitive political risk coverage to all shipping lines is a direct challenge to that architecture. If American-backed insurance proves cheaper and more reliable during crises, shippers may not return to London when the dust settles.
2. It breaks the actuarial blockade.
I said yesterday that China has massive leverage over Iran but zero leverage over Lloyd's. The same was true of every oil-producing and oil-consuming nation watching their economies choke.
This goes around the insurance market entirely. If the DFC covers the voyage and the Navy escorts the tanker, the ships sail. Oil flows. The spreadsheet blockade breaks.
3. It redirects billions in premium revenue.
War risk premiums in the Gulf are currently running at extreme multiples — 3× to 5× pre-conflict rates. Those premiums were flowing to London reinsurers who then pulled coverage anyway.
Now those premiums flow to Washington. At rates the DFC can set below the panicked London market, while still generating substantial returns. The same shippers get cheaper coverage. The revenue just changes continents.
4. It creates a chokepoint within the chokepoint.
The Strait of Hormuz is already the world's most critical energy bottleneck. If the U.S. is both insurer and naval escort, America controls access at two levels: physical security and financial coverage.
No other nation can replicate that. You need the world's dominant navy and a sovereign balance sheet large enough to backstop the risk. Only one country has both.
5. It reassures every stakeholder simultaneously.
Gulf producers were watching exports freeze. Asian and European consumers were watching energy prices spike. Both feared the Iran campaign would wreck their economies.
One announcement addressed all of them: your oil will move, your ships will be covered, and the rates will be reasonable.
Yesterday I described a system with no TARP, no Fed equivalent, no backstop at global scale.
This may be the first attempt to build one in real time, during the crisis itself.
The actuarial blockade just met a sovereign counterparty.

Pay attention.
Law professor @JonathanTurley WARNS that the politicians fueling this year’s riots sound eerily familiar: “They are so much like these figures that enabled the mob in the French Revolution and then ultimately were themselves guillotined and devoured by the revolution.”

Flashback to when Elon Musk completely obliterated Don Lemon.
He never recovered after this.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This is altered, neither men said those words. Full interview with transcript here: rev.com/transcripts/el…
It is true that Lemon never recovered after this, if based on Google searches for "Don Lemon" from January 1, 2024 (this interview was in March), to the end of 2025: trends.google.com.au/explore?q=don%…
This seems relevant. Funny how things…change?
