Thrilled to share that my first publication has been accepted and will be out soon with one of my favorite academic journals of all time @ROAPEjournal (review of African political economy). Will let folks know when it’s live.

Out supporting the @NTEUnion strike at @SAEInstituteAUS. They’ve had 2yrs of negotiations and still no EA + insulting pay offer of 1c/hour above the award.

In the 19th century we had "blackbirding". Today Australian fossil fuels are drowning the Pacific. How little has changed...

Just got out of a 300+ strong USyd @NTEUNSW meeting. 93% voted in favour to endorse the institutional academic boycott of Israel. Feeling very proud to be union today.

Is Australia’s unemployment really at a “near 50-year low”? Our research suggests that the official unemployment rate is based on strict and outdated definitions, with the result that it significantly underestimates the actual number of Australian’s looking for work. 1/

On rent freezes.
In a sense, we already have them.
Whenever a landlord increases the rent for an existing tenancy, current tenancy laws impose a mini rent freeze. Rent cannot be increased again for 6 or 12 months, depending on the state/territory.

Bold new theories of inflation, ignored by the academic mainstream:
#1. Inflation is caused by the Kierkegaardian sin of despair, the “sickness unto death” at the heart of the human condition.

Another blow to 404020 academic labour conditions. The USyd deal prioritises the current gen of academics w good contracts.
The next aca generation will be sharply divided into haves (research stars w ideal trajectories) and have-nots (“education focused” cheap teachers).

I've written an open letter to @mscott, the @Sydney_Uni VC, calling on him to reduce the teaching allocation for severely overworked education-focused academics by 10%. There are no grounds to refuse this minimal and badly needed investment in teaching quality & staff well-being.

I expect @Sydney_Uni bargainers at least to take it seriously when we call for real controls on overwork. But today we got sniggers from a senior member of the mngmnt team. Not even trying to hide his contempt for colleagues, often young, being pushed to breaking point. @NTEUnion

We've never had as big a meeting as today's. I don't think anyone expected that we'd manage to get even more people than last week. That we did is a sign of our determination not to accept the harmful changes to the uni that mgmnt still want to force through. #usydstrike

If you work at or care about @Sydney_Uni, read our new @NTEUnion fact-sheet: 'Education-focused roles: the latest threat to workloads and the teaching-research nexus'. This is shaping up as a major issue ahead of the March 29 and 31 #Usydstrike.

USyd colleagues: I was an academic rep on the NTEU bargaining team for 18 months. Now that I also have a little distance, I’d like to share some honest thoughts about what has gone wrong this round (very long thread)

Fantastic work by union colleagues here - a calculator to put flesh on the paycut being offered by @Sydney_Uni management. Estimate how much you and other colleagues will lose, while management's overpaid executives simultaneously try to force you to work more. #USydstrike

Good coverage of the @Sydney_Uni contract dispute from Workplace Express. It's absurd that the uni management wants to further intensify workload while also giving staff a real pay cut. That's two things that should never go together. @NTEUnion
