My whole world at peace aside from the furious licking of this group of misfits. Welcome to the weekend!

I grew up in a blended family of nine. It was total culture shock once I moved to living alone and none of my stuff moved around while I was gone. I left things out on the coffee table for weeks just for the odd novelty of seeing them not move. I have fully reverted now that I have small children. It feels like all the nostalgic familiarity of a second jail sentence. 😅 Their cuteness fully makes up for it.

One of the walk-in coolers at our private butcher shop on the farm went out. We opted for a mini split and web-enabled diy coolbot controller setup for about half the money of a new conventional hvac unit. This tech has come so far in the past decade.

I just got the commercial snow contract for a dealership I worked at in college after the contractor last year pushed a Hagie boom into a snow pile. Feels full circle somehow. The world is pretty small out here sometimes.

Pretty sure this guy paid for this tractor twice… I fixed several trans problems and then had to replace most of a trans harness so it would start. 🫠 don’t buy tractors that already have shifting issue. Trashed spool valves get expensive in a hurry.
Today I was asked by a local shop to diagnose a tractor transmission on a type I’ve never worked on before. It probably took 40% longer than someone that knew the process but those people apparently don’t exist here. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Fed the whole 2200 page manual to Sol5.6 and started hooking up pressure gauges.

Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you’re a cowboy, a mechanic, or a truck driver. When it’s grain harvest you just put out fires. Customer got quoted 120k for a new unload system in this bin, so here we are billing diesel shop rates to fix it. They also tried to replace something themselves and blew apart a $6000 pump housing first. 😬

New: the Fed Cattle tool now has a Value Across the Chain view. It puts bred cows, feeders, fed cattle and the boxed cutout on one page, each ranked against its own history. It also shows the packer spread, a feeding margin gauge and how sale barns compare to the Feeder Index. Can a cattle guy give us some feedback? Direct link:morninghogwallow.com/v/6GH2f…

Recent favorite use of ai: feed it a whole wiring schematic for a piece of heavy equipment and let it trace sections while I run the physical tests on the system.

I watched his widow grow up since she was about 10. She was the generation that replaced me when I aged out of youth leadership in the beef industry. She’s expecting a baby in October. What a gut punch to the Gelbvieh and Red Angus families. Prayer is needed here. God, bring her strength. pvpmortuary.com/obituaries/e…

this is an impressive ai based tool for viewing ag market data and news that I stumbled across today.
The Morning Hog Wallow is live. A free, no-login dashboard for anyone who trades or works the meat and grain markets. Pork, beef, poultry and grain in one place: USDA wholesale cutout values, CME livestock futures, cold storage, WASDE, Commitments of Traders, grains, fertilizer, freight - plus a daily ag news feed that pulls the whole trade into one screen. No PDFs to dig through. Clean, interactive charts you can actually read. morninghogwallow.com/

There’s a couple trucks parked half-hazardly different directions in the lawn of one of the local rural fire stations from the guys tearing out of there early this morning to evacuate flood victims. It’s a bit damp here…

This little💩Has been missing for FOUR DAYS and decided to pull a full on Mark Twain "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated” act. She had the audacity to wander by nonchalantly ignoring me today.
We rotated a set of cows back around to the main house at Silvamore tonight and one new calf got left behind because the mom hid it. Got ‘er found before dark though! Sneaky buggers

Ecm decided to hang up. Wiped the whole thing. Had to start over. Got it though. 🫠 I’m billing that one by the hour…

He gets a ton of grief from old heads for being young. He told me a story from when he started after getting his crane certs at 19 years old. He was setting a 16 story apartment complex in Chicago. Guy showed up who was his oiler. Things went great for about an hour. Then he started asking questions.. found out he was 19 and the oiler was 53. “Im not listening to a effing kid.” Buddy never asked him to do a single thing like oil tracks, grease house or cable or clean windows, which is an oilers job… he did it all himself and ran the crane, just because he didn’t care. Doesn’t matter a bit how hard you have to work, just get it done. Love that mentality.
For whatever reason, I had an incredibly competent cohort of kids in my age group growing up. This morning one of them is working on a data center job where he was brought on as foreman immediately at 28 years old, and handed a crew to run. He then spent 6 months cranking out this project and was awarded employee of the year at a 2500 person construction group. This morning he had to go fire a 60 year old operator for mouthing off and running a machine out of fuel on an incline he wasn’t supposed to be on. I think this is funny because my friend is a good ‘ol boy redneck that would love to be farming full time instead.
