100% this. Please remember last time she was elected on a hope and change mandate, and what's happened since. If you can't see potential outside "progressives" warming seats at city hall, your optimism will be short lived.
The headline is bad but the column isn't. We do need to see actual bold moves from Chow, starting with freezing the police budget (or better yet reducing it) and ending encampment clearances entirely. And if the numbers convince her she doesn't have to, that's a bad thing.

Today CBC published an article with the headline: “Why a spate of gun-for-hire shootings in Toronto were likely paid for by Iran.” I was intrigued, as there has been almost 0 evidence offered for this claim thus far. Unfortunately this article doesn’t offer any either, adding nothing new. CBC says they spent weeks on the investigation, so these are pretty pitiful results, at least in terms of finding evidence of who paid for the shootings. I’m not sure why they feel comfortable with such a declarative headline given the lack of evidence (other than journalistic standards going out the window when the subject is an Official Enemy country). Also, CBC and other journalists continue platforming police claims that they need backdoor access to messaging apps to solve these shootings, with no push back or critique about how these powers can be abused, including against journalists. cbc.ca/news/investigates/ira…

🚨🇵🇸 NEW: Gaza’s remaining hospitals face imminent power outages as fuel shortages push generators to the brink of mechanical failure, the Palestinian Ministry of Health warned an urgent plea on Saturday. ▪️Engineering teams are resorting to emergency measures, including recycling dwindling fuel supplies, to keep generators running. The ministry warned that the equipment is operating beyond safe technical limits and risks irreparable damage. ▪️“The current situation has gone beyond the warning stage,” the ministry said, warning that the crisis now threatens a “complete and immediate power outage” in vital, life-saving hospital departments. ▪️The ministry urgently appealed to international organizations for emergency fuel, spare parts and technical assistance to prevent the collapse of hospital power systems.
Gaza’s hospitals are facing another threat to life-saving care as supplies of oil needed to operate electricity generators run out. The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza warned of possible mechanical failures, deteriorating equipment, and power disruptions in critical departments. With hospital generators requiring more than 2,500 liters of oil per month, the ministry is calling for urgent intervention to allow the entry of essential oil supplies and spare parts.

💢 Israeli forces have driven more than 2,000 Palestinians from their homes in Hebron, Hebron Mayor Yousef al-Jabari said Saturday according to AFP, carrying out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's vow to raze the neighborhood of the two gunmen who killed two Israeli soldiers manning an illegal military checkpoint Friday. Soldiers ordered families out over loudspeakers in the middle of the night, residents said, and many left with only what they could carry. Bulldozers had already begun demolishing homes near the Farsh al-Hawa checkpoint on Friday, and Hebron officials say about 1,300 more people could lose theirs. The city of more than 200,000 remains under siege, with residents unable to enter or leave. Palestinian officials reminded local media that "collective punishment” is prohibited under Geneva Conventions. Netanyahu, who faces elections Tuesday, has paired the demolitions with a pledge to build "over 100 new settlements." Israeli forces and settlers have also continued attacks on Palestinian civilians across the West Bank in the past 48 hours, where they have killed more than 1,100 Palestinians since October 2023, according to AFP.

Since this morning, I’ve been unable to leave my home. All checkpoints in H2 and exits from Hebron are closed. Israeli forces have begun demolishing homes and shops near the site of the attack. Residents are living in fear, cut off from basic necessities. We urgently call on the UN, international governments, and humanitarian organizations to act now: protect civilians, demand an end to unlawful demolitions and collective restrictions, and ensure safe access to essential supplies and emergency services. Hebron must not be forgotten. We need urgent action, not just statements of concern.

Benjamin Netanyahu, declared today that he is planning to carry out the ethnic cleansing of entire neighborhoods in Hebron. His declaration represents an alarming escalation in Israel’s policies of forced displacement and a flagrant violation of international law and the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. It must be unequivocally condemned, and the international community must act immediately to prevent the forcible displacement of Palestinian residents and hold those responsible accountable.

Over half of Gaza (nearly 70%) is an IDF-designated kill zone, where the IDF murders any living Palestinian. The kill zone is marked with yellow concrete blocks. The IDF moves the yellow kill zone blocks at night, while genocide survivors are sleeping, expanding the kill zone.
All of Shuja’iyya is now under the full control of the Israeli occupation army. Since Sunday, Israeli occupation forces have been pushing the Yellow Line west through one of Gaza City’s largest neighbourhoods, dragging the yellow concrete blocks forward at night until they sit right beside the tents of displaced families. In parts of western Shuja’iyya, the blocks are now just 10 metres from Salah Al-Din Street. Families woke to heavy gunfire from military vehicles and quadcopters aimed at their tents, and hundreds have fled in the dark with nowhere to go and not even a tent waiting for them. “It destroyed everything,” the man filming says, “and turned this area into fire and rubble on whoever remained.” This morning, the occupation also moved the line forward in neighbouring Al-Tuffah, along the same road. Palestinian researchers say the Yellow Line now confines Gaza’s population to about 40 percent of the Strip, and a year into the ceasefire, that space shrinks every few nights. mohamed_aljabary (IG)

🚨 BREAKING: Half a million Palestinians in Gaza will lose monthly food assistance as funding shortages force major World Food Programme cuts ahead of winter, ABC News Australia reports. ➤ WFP is reducing its monthly reach from 1.6 million people to 1.1 million. Families receiving two food parcels will now get one, and flour bags will shrink. ➤ Daily hot meals have fallen from 250,000 to 150,000. Some families in hard-to-reach areas will receive meals every other day instead of daily. Cash assistance for 75,000 families is being cut by 40%. ➤ WFP’s Carl Skau said traditional donors, including the U.S. and Europe, have reduced funding. “It’s not because the needs are down … it’s only due to the lack of funding,” Skau told ABC. ➤ Around 1.4 million people face crisis-level hunger or worse, including 200,000 in emergency conditions. WFP says it urgently needs $450 million for six months of operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

We have released a free open source tool 'Zero Breach' - that can identify whether a recent Israeli spyware campaign left traces on your PC - the one Citizen Lab exposed, where Israeli ad-tech was used to infect journalists through 'no-click' ordinary ads. It needs Python installed (python.org — tick "Add python.exe to PATH" during setup). Then open PowerShell in the folder where you saved it and run: python -X utf8 zero-breach.py It takes about 15 minutes. It only reads - it changes nothing, needs no admin, and never connects to the internet. It checks for 338 indicators and tells you if one of your browsers interacted with one of the infected ads in the past. (It also checks for Candiru infection) Download it here: github.com/interplains/zero-… You can also check whether your browser or device already blocks these kinds of ads, without downloading anything, here: archivegenocide.com/scan/ You are looking for a green result ✅ - if not, fix your browser settings, install an ad blocker / DNS resolver. For phones: Tens of thousands of apps show these ads, so we suggest you set up a DNS resolver (NextDNS, AdGuard, or a router/Pi-hole blocklist) so your phone blocks all of them automatically. We also publish ready-made blocklists you can subscribe to as well. Use them. Pease report any issues in our telegram linked in bio God bless.

“Let me die,” American photojournalist Heidi Levine repeats to journalists Jasper Nathaniel as they try to outrun masked Israeli settlers who attacked her on Friday while she covered the olive harvest in the West Bank village of Abu Falah, near Ramallah. Around 80 settlers attacked Palestinian olive harvesters in the village, AP reported. The Palestinian Red Crescent said it treated six people injured in two attacks in Abu Falah. Levine, a freelancer for the Washington Post, told the Committee to Protect Journalists that the settlers knocked her down and kicked her for at least 10 minutes, even after she identified herself as an American journalist. They stole her camera, phone and bag. She was eventually taken to a hospital in Ramallah. "The IDF provided cover, with tear gas and machine guns, while the settlers beat" Levine "nearly to death," Nathaniel wrote, adding that soldiers then shot a Palestinian bystander and aimed their guns at and shoved paramedics trying to treat him. AP photos and circulating videos show Israeli soldiers standing over a wounded Palestinian man after they shot him. Andrey X, an activist also at the scene, said a Palestinian man "saved our lives from the settler-terrorists who attacked the olive harvesters and journalists” armed only with a slingshot.
To be clear, the only reason I was able to reach Heidi was because young Palestinians provided cover with rocks against machine-gun- and tear-gas-wielding settlers and soldiers. It’s those kids, not the settler terrorists, who the IDF was hunting after the attack.
