On October 26, OpenAI announced an AI-generated proof that claims to refute the ETH. The research presents a deterministic subexponential-time algorithm for exactly counting the satisfying assignments of fixed-width Boolean formulas. If independently verified, this result would challenge a foundational assumption in computational complexity theory. Three things are worth paying attention to: 1. The proof has been formalized in Lean, but independent expert review is still underway. 2. This does NOT mean that Bitcoin or Ethereum’s cryptography has been broken. However, AI’s ability to discover unexpected algorithms makes rigorous security research increasingly important. 3. AI may evolve beyond simply executing instructions to discovering new methods, testing established assumptions, and solving problems once considered intractable.
