Pavol Gašpar likes fast cars. But there the comparison with James Bond ends.
So is Slovakia’s intelligence agency really the worst in Europe?
I spoke to an intelligence expert, a former CIA analyst and a former Slovak justice minister to find out.

Thousands protested in Prague yesterday against plans to scrap the licence fee.
The govt says it’s keeping a promise. Journalists fear political control of public broadcasting.
I spoke to journalists in Prague and Bratislava about what’s at stake.

Slovakia’s spy chief crashed his muscle car in flip-flops and sports a Godfather tattoo.
L’Express said SIS was Europe’s worst secret service.
But do spy rankings matter?
I asked a security expert, a former spook and an ex-justice minister.

The Babiš govt advanced a bill scrapping TV and radio licence fee at 4:36am as protesters chanted outside.
The opposition warns of Orbán-style illiberal democracy.
The govt says it’s fulfilling an election promise.
The two are not mutually exclusive.

Fellow foreign journalists, we in the Czech Republic need your help. We're going on a strike. The current Czech government is following the fallen authoritarian leader of Hungary Viktor Orban and too wants to nationalize Czech Television and Czech Radio. It now, after the midterm election debacle, wants to do so before the public has a chance to voice its opinion. It is hastily convening evening and Saturday sessions of the Chamber of Deputies.
The coalition is signaling that it fears the public’s reaction. It is disregarding the opinions of experts, who argue that such a fundamental step as changing the funding of public media must be thoroughly discussed and prepared.
The @verejnopravne_ initiative firmly opposes the attempt to push through the nationalization of @CzechTV and @CRozhlas. Experts from the Czech Republic and abroad, a significant portion of society, and both media outlets have clearly stated that the government’s plan threatens the independence and stability of both media outlets. Instead of engaging in a substantive debate, the coalition has decided to force the proposal through.
In addition to the fact that the rushed developments in this matter threaten the independence and stability of both media outlets, they will also have a negative impact on the state budget, for which the cabinet has already proposed an exceptionally high deficit. The nationalization of public media will thus hit the wallets of all citizens of the Czech Republic.
The government is thereby forcing the employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio to stage a full-day strike. It will take place on Tuesday, November 3.
We call on everyone who cares about the future of Czech Television and Czech Radio to make their position known publicly and loudly. We, the employees of both institutions, are prepared to defend both public media outlets.
For the people. Not for politicians.

Baby Anhelina and her mom Inna were killed by Russia yesterday.
Anhelina was just over a year old. Her mom, Inna Mariukhna, was a primary school teacher. They were in the park in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv region, when a Russian drone attacked.
Little Anhelina was killed in her stroller. Her mom died of her injuries in hospital.
Another girl killed in the strike was just 11 years old.
Six people lost their lives from that Russian strike. All of them had simply been spending time in the park. At least 15 more were injured, including seven kids.
Deepest condolences...

Hague is demonstrably correct. Going to say it again. The fact there are still people on the right lashing themselves to and venerating Trump is incomprehensible.
William Hague declares Trump the worst president of his lifetime, and struggles to see how anyone could have a different opinion.
“This mishandling of world affairs … is the most serious development and negative development in the world since the Second World War.“

Not in my worst imaginings did I think that one day we would have a POTUS who, in the face of scenes like this, would say that Russia had "behaved adequately" towards Ukraine
A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children.
I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.
A crumbling factory in a small Czech town.
Once, it was the difference between life and death for more than a thousand Jews.
Today, the buildings of Oskar Schindler's ark are being painstakingly restored.
I went inside to see what's left.

Andrej Babiš said in Brussels yesterday that he would never allow the Czech Republic to adopt the euro.
The Czech koruna is more than just a currency. It's also a symbol of national identity.
Why are Czechs so attached to their crown?

Their wedding took place less than an hour away. Getting Slovakia to recognise it is proving a much longer journey.

Last night, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck an airfield in the Voronezh region. Four Su-34 aircraft were destroyed and two more Su-34s were hit. The Russians used them to terrorize our people. These very warplanes were ready to launch new attacks on Ukraine and were loaded with aerial bombs.
Our Long Neptune missile was used to strike the target. I thank the warriors of the Ukrainian Navy for their precision!
Our long-range sanctions also reached a site in the Oryol region used to store and launch attack drones. A target was also hit in the Black Sea.
These are our justified responses to all of Russia’s terror against Ukraine. Russia is dragging out the war, so our long-range operations will continue.
Robert Fico is preparing talks with Ukraine. And Russia.
The Slovak PM calls it a foreign policy looking in all four directions.
His critics see something rather different.

The world knows Schindler's story. But few have seen inside the factory where he saved more than a thousand Jews from the Holocaust.
The buildings are still standing, slowly being rescued from decay.
I was given a rare tour of Schindler's Ark.

Ukraine’s freedom is not President Trump’s to bargain away.
He is wrong to ease sanctions on Russian diesel, wrong to blame President Zelensky for prolonging Putin’s war, and wrong to undermine a nation fighting for its right to exist. Russia is the aggressor. Always has been. Reward Russia, and we should expect to see more aggression, including from other countries. We can also kiss goodbye to any just and lasting peace.
This is why Conservatives have stood with Ukraine against Putin. Ukraine’s future belongs to Ukrainians. They alone have the right to choose their president, and we stand with President Zelensky because he fights not for himself, but for the survival of his country and his people.
