Today @POTUS and @VP announced the American Climate Corps — an initiative to train young people for careers that help tackle climate change. This is an important step forward, and wouldn't be possible without the organizing efforts of young people across the country.
Today, we are mobilizing the next generation of clean energy, conservation, and climate resilience workers. Join us at whitehouse.gov/ClimateCorps

Every "but what about...?" argument against human-caused climate change is already covered by @skepticscience's handy list; so why won't it convince people? Because it's never been about science or facts. It's solution aversion so any excuse that justifies that position will do.

Indeed. We are not as addicted to fossil fuels as some might want you to think. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
A common confusion is that to decarbonise, the world will need to produce the equivalent of coal, oil & gas in the form of low-carbon energy. That's not true. Most fossil energy gets wasted. In the US, just one-third gets turned into useful services. The rest is wasted as heat.

FEMA and Corps of Engineers are focusing on centralized fossil rather than distributed solar + batteries in rebuilding Puerto Rico's fragile grid -- wrong move from climate and environmental justice perspectives, writes @RuthSantiagopr in Sabin Center guest blog.
🇵🇷 Guest Blog: USACE & #FEMA promote #fossilfuel dependence & a centralized grid in #PuertoRico. Ruth Santiago explains how this approach will cost lives: buff.ly/3OD0ETA

Here's the best, accessable, review of AMOC science you're likely to see this week:
Here's a thread in pictures about the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC which is making headlines this week. I've studied this topic since 1991 and will show key data and models & some video. Let's go: observed temperature trend since 1901 from nature.com/articles/nclimate… 🧵1/x

A great thread on work led by @MadedduSilvia that we reference A LOT about the electrification potential in the industry sector. Spoiler alert: nearly all industrial heat demand can be electrified.
"Electrification is for buildings and cars but not for industry" we sometimes hear. Not so fast: Research by @PIK_Climate suggests that 78% of Europe's industrial energy demand (excl. feedstocks) is electrifiable with existing tech and up to 99% with tech under development. 🧵

so many of the policy-relevant journal articles by economists on climate are not in econ journals
New in Science: Our multi-model comparison of the Inflation Reduction Act looks at its emissions and energy system impacts, showing that economy-wide emissions may drop 43-48% below 2005 levels by 2035 with accelerated clean energy deployment. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Time for a bit of climate hope. Solar power is the fastest growing energy technology in history, and wind is not far behind. This graph shows how rapidly different energy technologies expanded after reaching their first exajoule of energy production, on a logarithmic scale.

This report from New Orleans is consistent with my recent article about the inadequacies of US laws in protecting chemical and waste management facilities from extreme weather events worsened by climate change. bit.ly/3HLEIRA
A hurricane could spark a chemical disaster so massive that no corner of New Orleans would be safe. According to the Chalmette Refinery’s Risk Management Plan, an accident could unleash a fast-moving and potentially lethal gas that could reach anywhere in the metro area. (🧵1/7)

Is the impact of wildfire smoke persistent enough to affect agricultural yields too? Have we seen data on that yet from, say, California Central Valley?
This is solar. This is solar on Canadian wildfire smoke. Any questions?

Hey media - every single article you write about the wildfire smoke should mention the role of climate change in making the fires worse and causing this. See @capitalweather for how to appropriately discuss this.
Replying to @capitalweather
Does climate change have something to with this? Yes. Record heat in Canada has helped fuel the fires. And the fire situation in Canada is unprecedented. 6/ xitter.cf/JimTeskeNC9/status/166…
