Metallica Frontman James Hetfield just called out artists who turn their concerts into political rallies: “Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their BULLSH*T.”
It’s great to hear a musician say this instead of betraying their own fans and attacking them from the stage.

Why is this a difficult question to answer ?
"Do you think that the state of Israel, as a safe home for Jews after the Holocaust and after the pogroms, has a right to exist?"

The meaning of the phrase Jews Don’t Count is often misunderstood. It means: as a vulnerable minority. A minority that has suffered, like all minorities, extreme violence and discrimination. The assumption remains, despite history, that Jews are too powerful really to be seen in that way. Drawing attention to Jewish suffering is seen as only another example of their power, of Jews' ability to highlight their own suffering at the expense of others. Jews are not granted specificity in suffering: it must always be compared to the suffering of others, and found wanting. And if you want to see that in action, have a look at some of the responses on here - or no doubt, below this message - to the various attempts to commemorate one acute example of Jewish suffering, that took place three years ago today.

Zionism is both historic and spiritual; the ancient connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel and their right to self-determination in their historic homeland.
I am British by birth, belonging and love; Jewish by inheritance, memory and faith. Britain is my country. Israel is not a competing loyalty, it is the homeland of the Jewish people to which I am bound by ancestry, memory and identity.
For millions of Jews, that is the heart of Zionism. Not supremacy, dispossession or the killing of Palestinians and not a colonial claim to a foreign land but the self-determination of a people with an ancient and continuous connection to it. In practice, it must mean two peoples entitled to self-determination both living in security and freedom with neither people’s future purchased with the lives, rights or humanity of the other.
That is why declaring “Zionism is racism” is not merely wrong, it tells most Jews that their understanding of their own history, identity and collective freedom is itself morally suspect. The Greens should ask themselves whom they are trying to please by adopting a slogan that turns Jewish self-determination into a moral stain. If your politics of inclusion requires millions of Jews to renounce a central part of their history and identity before they qualify for your solidarity, it isn’t inclusion. You are telling Jews: you may belong here but only if you disown Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people. That is not anti-racism. It is imposing a political test on Jews that no genuinely progressive movement would dream of imposing on any other minority.

The death penalty is inhumane. That this woman suffered abuse and has brain damage caused by her mum’s drug use during pregnancy makes it even more heartbreaking. I don’t care who you are: if you support executing her, you are cruel.

Whatever your politics this is what cultural democracy looks like. Opera, theatre, music & art shouldn’t be inherited privileges but part of our common life; doors through which anyone can walk, whatever their income, postcode or background. Access to culture is access to possibility, to imagination, confidence & belonging. We should be doing this here. 👇🏻
Never been to the opera before?
Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @MetOpera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

If your voice is loud for human rights in one cause but silent when LGBT people are arrested in Turkey, ask yourself why. Lowering our expectations of equality in the name of cultural sensitivity is the soft bigotry of low expectations. If some injustices provoke outrage while others are explained away, that isn’t principle. It’s prejudice bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwg7…
