What a race and season.
1997: Villeneuve wins the title
#OnThisDay 26 October,ย Williams driver Jacques Villeneuve secured the 1997 Driversโ Championship in a dramatic finale at the 1997 European Grand Prix, overcoming a controversial clash with the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher. On lap 48, Villeneuve attempted a decisive pass on Schumacher, only for the German driver to turn into him, resulting in heavy contact. Schumacher ended up in the gravel, while Villeneuve continued to finish third and clinch the title. โEither he had his eyes shut, or his hands slipped on the steering wheel,โ Villeneuve fumed after the race. โI knew there was a 50% chance heโd try to take me out.โ Schumacher defended his actions, claiming, โJacques braked so late that if I hadnโt turned in, we both would have missed the corner.โย
The FIA later sided with Villeneuve, penalising Schumacher by stripping him of all his championship points. The McLaren drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard took a 1-2 finish for the team.

The tradition returns. Once again this year, The Royal Canadian Legion, in proud collaboration with @CdnHeritage , is bringing the moving Remembrance Banners back to the heart of our nation's capital for 2026.
These powerful visual tributes will line Wellington Street, Elgin Street, and the area surrounding the National War Memorial, creating a solemn avenue of gratitude for all who pass by.
Observed across Commonwealth nations since the end of the First World War, Remembrance Day holds a sacred place in our national identity. In Canada, it is a dedicated time to honour and remember the brave men and women who have served our country through times of war, conflict, and peace.

1976: Hunt wins the title
#OnThisDay 24 October, despite missing two races following his life-threatening crash at the Nรผrburgring, Ferrari driver Niki Lauda entered the seasonโs final race at Fuji, the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix, leading the championship by three points over the McLaren of James Hunt. Hunt qualified second, just ahead of Lauda, but race day brought thick fog and torrential rain, with streams of water crossing the track.
Although some drivers called for the race to be cancelled, the organisers proceeded. Hunt quickly took the lead at the start, while Lauda, struggling in the treacherous conditions, dropped back to the midfield. On the second lap, he pulled into the pits and retired, later explaining, โFor me, there is something more important than the world championship.โ
Hunt maintained the lead but began to fall back as the track dried, losing positions to Patrick Depailler and Mario Andretti. Depaillerโs rear tyre began deflating two laps later, forcing him to pit, and Hunt soon followed with a similar issue. After a pit stop, Hunt rejoined the race in fifth place and set out to chase down Depailler, Alan Jones, and Clay Regazzoni. Depailler overtook both on lap 70, and Hunt followed suit on the next lap, securing the third place he needed to clinch the championship. Reflecting on the race, Hunt said, โThe front tyre started shredding, and I had rubbish all over my visor. I didnโt know what the hell to do. Then the tyre burst. I dropped some places during the pit stop, but I didnโt know how many. At the finish, I thought I still had to pass a couple of cars for third. Fortunately, I was wrong.โ
