John was a good friend. His family will be in everybody’s thoughts. RIP.
John Kelly , Chair of the Bloody Sunday Justice Campaign, died peacefully in the early hours after a long illness. He will be remembered with great love and pride in his home town of Derry, throughout Ireland and abroad. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

This must be the most hilarious, appalling and revealing tweet I’ve seen in a longtime. No wonder the USA is the laughing stock of so much of the world.
There are now over 10,000 COMMENTS on this post. Take a wild guess how many are from MAGA voters calling me “evil,” “disturbed,” and “unpatriotic” for supporting the teaching of ARABIC NUMERALS to American children. Yes, folks. Numbers. The same numbers their kids learn in kindergarten. The outrage is absolutely spectacular. Imagine being so blinded by your prejudice that you accidentally declare war on basic arithmetic. They saw the word “Arabic,” and apparently every brain cell responsible for critical thinking clocked out for the day. And the best part? They're still arguing in the comments.

An alliance of leftwing European political parties co-founded by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has lost access to its bank account. The Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25) said on Tuesday that its account was “closed suddenly and without warning” on 8 October, and the group has lost access to tens of thousands of euros. The organisation has not named the bank, citing legal reasons, but spokesperson Erik Edman said the account was held in Belgium. “We asked the bank for an explanation and requested an extension,” he told Novara Media. “It declined to explain its decision and refused the extension.” He said DiEM25 was unable to confirm “whether its decision was politically motivated”. However, he added, “through conversations with other organisations in Belgium, we have heard accounts suggesting a worrying pattern in which progressive political organisations appear to have been disproportionately affected by debanking.” The bank account was where DiEM25 supporters had been sending small monthly donations. Edman said it has two staff members and an office in Belgium and is at risk of being unable to pay salaries, social security contributions and rent there. The group has started an emergency fundraiser to cover its immediate costs and says it is looking for a new bank in Belgium. “Why did they do it?” Varoufakis, who is also DiEM25’s secretary general, said in a video statement. “You may say [it’s because] we are insufficiently supportive of the oligarchy, of genocide… but of course we couldn’t possibly comment.” Varoufakis served as an MP for DiEM25’s Greek offshoot, Mera25, between 2019 and 2023. He founded DiEM25 with Croatian philosopher and political activist Srećko Horvat in 2016. The 192,000-member organisation also has parties in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. In February, Varoufakis was indicted in Greece after saying on a podcast that he had taken ecstasy over 36 years ago in Australia. Mera25 described the prosecution as politically motivated, saying Greece's judiciary was going after “whoever refuses to bend the knee”.

It is time Sinn Fein moved on from dancing on the grave of unionism. Time to spell out positively their vision for a NIreland as a stepping stone towards a united Ireland. Increasing number of unionists interested and willing to listen.

Proud to stand with Sean Brown’s family at the Supreme Court in London today as they seek the truth about what happened to their husband and father. The courts in Northern Ireland have been clear, there needs to be a public inquiry into the events surrounding Sean’s murder.

Putting an already grievously bereaved family through these ridiculous legal hoops, just to get to the truth, is callous in the extreme. But if that's what it takes, the Brown family and their community are ready for them. declassifieduk.org/the-murde…

Richard Kay, what a disgraceful piece of selective anti-Irish journalism. To describe Ireland as a “sewer of anti-Semitism” is a sweeping and deeply insulting characterisation of an entire nation of 7.5 million people, north and south Let's be absolutely clear. Antisemitism is abhorrent. The 143 incidents reported by Ireland's Jewish Representative Council are deeply troubling and deserve massive consideration. Every Jewish person in Ireland deserves to live safely, free from hatred, intimidation, and discrimination. But acknowledging that does not require accepting your disgraceful attempt to portray an entire country as morally bankrupt because its people oppose the actions of the Israeli government. And since you've decided to question Ireland's humanitarian conscience, Richard, perhaps a few facts might be useful. if you had done some actual research, apart from listening to the campaigners who are targeting Ireland, to deflect from the atrocities in Gaza According to Ireland's official 2025 development assistance figures: Ireland contributed €1.88 billion in overseas development assistance, equivalent to 0.44% of our national income, they also provided more than €330 million in humanitarian funding, responding to crises across the world. Irish support through civil society partners alone reached over 9 million people across 64 countries. Ireland remains among the world's top 20 humanitarian donors. Irish humanitarian assistance has supported people affected by conflict and disaster in Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere. And here's a particularly inconvenient fact for your narrative: in 2024, 72% of Ireland's humanitarian funding through the programme reported by Irish Aid was directed towards forgotten and underfunded emergencies, including Syria, Yemen, the Sahel and the Horn of Africa. So much for your bullshite suggestion that Irish compassion only extends to Palestinians. These are not slogans shouted at demonstrations, Richard. They are documented financial commitments, delivered through the United Nations, the Red Cross and humanitarian organisations working in some of the most dangerous places on earth. Ireland has been providing development assistance for more than half a century. Its humanitarian commitment didn't suddenly materialise when the war in Gaza began. Then there's your remarkable treatment of the Starry Plough flag. You associate it with the INLA while omitting its origins with James Connolly's Irish Citizen Army in 1914. A century of Irish labour history conveniently discarded to manufacture a more sinister impression. Your comparison with Afghanistan is equally selective. Ireland's decision to play cricket against Afghanistan is open to legitimate criticism, but it does not establish that Irish people are indifferent to the Taliban's oppression of women. And let's discuss Britain, Richard? Britain has experienced serious antisemitic incidents, anti-Muslim hatred and racist violence. Would you consider it fair to describe the entire British population in similarly contemptuous terms? Or does that particular standard of collective condemnation only apply when you're writing about Ireland? There is a serious discussion to be had about antisemitism in Ireland. Jewish people who have experienced abuse deserve to be heard, believed and protected. But you have repeatedly blurred the distinction between hatred of Jewish people and legitimate criticism of the Israeli government, while giving readers a thoroughly distorted impression of Irish humanitarian values, shameful behaviour TBH Irish people can condemn Hamas's atrocities, reject antisemitism, oppose the suffering of Palestinian civilians, and demand accountability under international law. These positions are not mutually exclusive. And the suggestion that Ireland only cares about Palestinian suffering is contradicted by decades of humanitarian work and billions of euros in documented assistance. The most unbelievable irony, Richard, is that you've written an article supposedly condemning prejudice while indulging in sweeping national stereotyping yourself. You could have written a serious and necessary article about the safety of Ireland's Jewish community. Instead, you've chosen to caricature an entire country while overlooking evidence that contradicts and obliterates your argument. Ireland is not beyond criticism, Richard. But neither is your journalism, and the Irish people deserve considerably better than this absolute Isreali propaganda piece. I, for one, will be refraining from any further consideration of this publication, and I hope that other Irish people do the same.

NEW: A group of Catholic bishops prayed over President Trump in the Oval Office on Thursday, 12 days before the midterm elections, at a meeting organized by an official at the Heritage Foundation. A senior Vatican official called it “a highly inappropriate meeting and an insult to Pope Leo XIV.” In April, Trump called the pope “terrible for Foreign Policy,” and Vice President JD Vance warned that Leo should “be careful” when he talks about theology. thelettersfromleo.com/p/past…
