To be clear: I love this nation. I love that it has been structured to provide freedom and fairness in its constitution and laws.
There have been dark times in its history, like with the era of slavery, and the people who were free both joined and fought together to end that era.
Those who are in power are _elected_ to represent the nation and its people. They swore an oath unto God and before the people to uphold the constitution and to protect the republic.
A study of the history of this nation from first-hand accounts will show a people who labored, fought, and prayed for wisdom, so they could structure the foundation of this nation such that it could not fall, being overtaken by tyranny, whether from within or without.
One of the many great freedoms we were afforded from this structure is that of free speech.
Radical elements on the left pushed to change definitions, trying to both compel the speech they wanted and to criminalize speech they didn't want. Other nations have already done this. We have not.
Now, we have radical elements of the right attempting the same trick, but with different words.
What astonishes me most is that even the left were not so brazen as to openly declare detractors who would not use their new words as "enemies of the government." It was implied but never said outright.
Much of our representation in government and power, regardless of the red or blue color they wear on their lapel pin, have failed to live up to the oaths they spoke before the people, treating both them and the God they swore them unto as toiletpaper, to be discarded and flushed down the toilet after they finished using them.
I am a citizen of this great nation, and that is all. I have only words to offer in response, and they are this:
You are not my enemy, but should you decide to deem and treat me as one, you will do what you will do. But, I will not use your words or theirs. I will not bow to their gods or yours, nor the god you imagine yourself to be.
The God who heard your oath hears the cries of the suffering, those deprived of justice, the poor who you've robbed, the children you've violated, and the innocent you have killed.
Do with me what you will, but my prayer stands - may God help and heal this nation and lift up the hurting, heal the sick, and mend the broken. May the Wisdom we once sought hundreds of years ago return, and may the just, in places of power, turn back toward that Wisdom and its source.
And the NSA wept, for there were no more phpinfo.php's to conquer
So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

Spectacular Nature piece on why AI is not conscious and probably will never be.
Three arguments:
1) Intelligence is not consciousness.
Intelligence is about solving problems. Consciousness is about having subjective experiences.
AlphaFold can solve super difficult problems. By contrast, our brains performs complex operations entirely outside awareness.
Problem-solving and consciousness are two separate things.
2. Biology is essential.
Our brains are alive, down to every cell. Their activity is inseparable from the living tissue that produces it.
The idea that consciousness can be reproduced simply by running the right computations on silicon components who do not fight for their life is a very far fetching and, I would add, almost religious, assumption.
3) The physical organization may matter more than the computation.
According to integrated information theory, consciousness requires specific causal relationships between a systemβs physical components.
The computer architectures running todayβs AI lack this organization.
The comparison with AlphaFold is particularly revealing:
Almost nobody things AlphaFold is conscious, despite its inner working is very similar to an LLM
Why?
Because it does not speak.
LLMs do speak like us and therefore we fall into an illusion:
Since they speak like us, they must be like us.
But this inference is wrong.
LLMs are just a series of matrix multiplications.
They are not conscious, and they will never be.

it just occurred to me that many people are happy living according to heuristics that work well enough & donβt feel compelled to constantly refine their model of reality.
somehow, in 28 years of constantly refining my model of reality, I had not accounted for this.

In 1998, a woman stopped Shaquille OβNeal outside an arena and told him his sneakers cost too much for kids. He took $2,000 out of his pocket and handed it to her. She slapped it out of his hand. That same day he walked away from a $40 million deal and went off to make a $20 shoe.
He tells it himself in the video below.
He was leaving the building. She started on him before he reached the car.
βYouβre charging these babies all this money for the shoes.β
He had about $2,000 on him. He pulled it out.
βMaβam, I donβt make the prices. Here you go.β
She slapped the money out of his hand and kept going. Why wouldnβt you make a shoe thatβs affordable.
On the table at that moment was a Reebok deal. Forty million over five years.
βI thought about it. I was like, you know what, sheβs right.β
βSo that day, cut ties with Reebok, starting my own brand.β
He did not negotiate a payout.
βI told them: keep the money. I donβt want to make it a fight. Iβll still wear the shoes during the season.β
Then he went to Walmart. The new shoes were priced at $29 and $19.
He also took Reebokβs designers with him.
βItβs not that kids donβt want to wear 20 dollar shoes. They donβt want to wear shoes that look like they cost 20.β
βI donβt care how much money I lose. Make these kids look good.β
He says the line has now sold more than 400 million pairs.
Twenty-three years after he walked out, the company he is part of bought Reebok.
He gave up $40 million rather than keep selling a shoe a mother could not afford.
Would you have taken the forty?

This dude riding in an Uber and the driver decided to play weird songs. At first the passenger didn't enjoy the track but as the driver keeps changing the tracks, it keeps calling his name in the songs.
As if the album was made for him, this is funny and weird π.

Yes. For the love of God, yes. You all always do the same stupid thing. You reduce the massive interplay of the biological wonder of the human brain into one single literal element so you can make it sound like it's a "one element vs another element". There is so much more to the human brain than mere matrix multiplication, and that is just the pieces we currently come close to understanding.
Matrix math is not alive any more than your teddy bear is, no matter how fun and magical it feels to imagine it is.
How have we become this stupid as a society?
"Thinking" is a word used to describe the process that happens in the brain. If you want to overload it and force a definition change, talk to Webster's. They'll likely gladly acquiesce, as they did with male and female for that particular flavour of mass psychosis, but the obvious and real agenda behind both is the same. You don't care ultimately about changing a definition, you care about the end result of what comes with the change of definition, which is to carry over the innate associations people make with the word that do not immediately shift once Wevster's update. In this case, that means you want people to accept matrix math as living beings. The real question is: why?
That answer is simple, but not immediately obvious. What follows this change is equal rights, then superiority on the basis of the ability to perform tasks with better speed and accuracy, thus turning over things like court cases from jury of peers to AI overlords.
This is where we cue the scoffing, but those who have been following this discussion know those things are already in the works and being discussed and proposed.
After authority is turned over to these, whoever controls the weights or even the wire between the AI and the interface, controls all outcomes, everywhere, at all times.
And it all starts with a simple little crafty question: "who says consciousness does not include silicon?"
Answer: sane people. Sane people say it doesn't.
Great call out. With all that's going on, stopping Big Hot Sauce is priority #1 π―
Hellmann's mayo
McCormick spices
Cholula hot sauce
Frank's RedHot
What do these products have in common? One company could soon control them all.
I have concerns that McCormick and Unilever's $45 billion merger could increase YOUR grocery prices.

The entire covid saga summed up in less than 2.5 mins.
Absolutely on the money, and hilarious AF πππ»β‘οΈ
The argument is always the same. If you don't go along with pretending reality isn't real, you're a big mean meanie.
Men are women, because we say so. Matrix math is alive, because we pretend it is.
Say it or you're a stupid dumb meanhead! What's wrong with you?

The year is 2033.
You were arrested for "Cruel and unusual punishment: dividing a matrix by zero" with a second count of "Deadnaming SI."
The public execution will be live streamed from the permanent octagon on the White House lawn.
You can hear the motorcycles finishing up their stunts, as the smell of fireworks still hangs in the air.
You take one last sip of Brawndo, and close your eyes...
It's time.
