"despite no longer believing in hell, or purity culture, or the imminent rapture, they all struggled to overcome the toll those ideologies had taken on their minds and bodies." Such an important article. Thank you @lauraeanderson @RoomToThrive @C_Stroop newrepublic.com/article/1617…

“Denison University political scientist ⁦@PaulDjupe⁩ estimates that just over 20 percent of American evangelicals, or eight million people, left the church between 2016 and 2020.” The #EmptyThePews phenomenon turns out to bigger than I realized newrepublic.com/article/1617…

@lauraeanderson bringing it on the reality of religious trauma: "This is trauma, the same way trauma manifests from sexual violence or war." Great to see quotes from @brchastain @C_Stroop @PaulDjupe. Great work @srussellkraft! newrepublic.com/article/1617…

As a 7-year-old, I was accused of murder and I felt the weight of that crushing guilt for years. That’s what #ReligiousTrauma feels like on “#GoodFriday.”

"Finding new community after religious deconstruction is like going to a new playground as a kid with no parent as your secure attachment base." ~ @RoomToThrive Whew! That feels gut-punchingly true.

Just in case someone needs to hear this because I didn't realize it myself for a long time: If the thought of going to church makes you breathless, anxious, worried, weight on chest, trapped, angry, etc. You may be suffering religious trauma.

Have you been impacted by #AdverseReligiousExperiences? Are you able & willing to complete a brief exploratory survey about your experiences and add to this important body of knowledge? The survey is anonymous and takes ~5-10 minutes #religioustrauma religioustraumainstitute.com…

Trauma is our body's physiological response to feeling unsafe, not a single event. Understanding this can help us grasp the differences between raising awareness of complex trauma and trauma caused by high-demand religion on the one hand, and working toward healing on the other.

The Religious Trauma Institute (RTI) recognizes that trauma is a complex topic and the mere discussion of trauma can be potentially triggering for individuals. (THREAD) #religioustrauma #religioustraumainstitute #religiousabuse #churchtoo

I grew up hearing "all sins are equal at the foot of the cross" & it didn't matter if I sinned bigger/smaller than someone else b/c the reward & punishment was the same... that I need to forgive my abusers because god forgave me; what we did was equal to god. Thats messed up.
Have you ever wondered how some religious organizations systemically dismiss abuse and excuse perpetrators? A #ChurchToo thread. 1/

#Atheists who shame ex-believers for their belief, saying things like, “how could anyone believe this nonsense?” or “faith is believing what you know isn’t true,” are exacerbating #religioustrauma for folks. We need your support, not your shame and condescension.
Survivors of #ReligiousTrauma often experience a lot of shame. "I shouldn't have allowed that to happen to me." "How could I have been that stupid?" 1/7

#ReligiousTrauma stems from #ReligiousAbuse ...which means that like any other abuse victim there were dynamics of power & control that make it impossible for the victim to see what is actually going on. #Healing includes releasing the shame that abuse was somehow your fault

Self Awareness: Recognizing you were indoctrinated & how that played out in your life. Healing: Recognizing how indoctrination and #religiousabuse were internalized, impacting your experience of living which takes time, intention and a boatload of courage. #religioustrauma
