I have a serious question.
Have we become so focused on renaming ourselves as a collective that we’ve forgotten to investigate who we are as individual families?
For generations, people were told that their surnames came from slaveholders and weren’t really theirs. But genealogy reveals a much more complicated history.
Not every surname originated with an enslaver. Some families carried their names for generations, including free people of color before emancipation.
So why are we so quick to identify ourselves through newly created terms and racial classifications, yet rarely discuss the history of our own surnames?
What happened to tracing our family names, our ancestors, our communities, and the cultures passed down through our bloodlines?
Your surname may hold generations of history that you’ve never investigated.
Culture isn’t determined by a racial label alone. It’s also found in the families who raised us, the traditions they preserved, the places they came from, and the histories they passed down.
Before we rename the collective, shouldn’t we first learn the names and histories of the families we descend from?
How many of us actually know the history of our own surname?
