In awarding this year’s #NobelPeacePrize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice.
History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise and inhumane. The judges – those who guard the thin red line between order and chaos – are therefore highly deserving of our praise. But today, as these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked, we need people of courage, vision and determination – qualities that 2026 peace laureate Navi Pillay demonstrates in her work on the bench.

As the Israel team travels to Europe where they will play against Austria, Ireland and Kosovo between 24 September - 6 October, Palestinian families are being displaced and dispossessed, their land stolen, their olive trees uprooted, and their histories erased by settlers with the support of the Israeli military. The beautiful game should bring people together, not rubber-stamp apartheid.
It’s unconscionable that the Israel men’s football team will participate in the UEFA Nations League this autumn despite clear evidence that Israel’s football association continues to support illegal settlements.
Sport should never be used as a public relations spectacle for states committing atrocities. When rules are broken, when occupation, apartheid and genocide are ongoing, we cannot look the other way.

Congratulations South Africa Legal Team. What a gift to humanity you are.
South Africa has officially submitted a substantial dossier to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), detailing Israel’s continued non-compliance with legally binding provisional measures.
The submission, formally handed over on 25 August 2026, serves to assist an ICJ committee of judges tasked with monitoring the implementation of the court’s orders in Gaza.
According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Israel’s non-compliance directly undermines the protective functions of international justice.
Hence, the submission is a vital milestone in the struggle for global accountability. By formally documenting Israel’s refusal to adhere to the court’s binding provisional measures, Pretoria is doing far more than advocating for Palestinian survival.

On this day in 1977, Steve Biko was arrested on his way home from a political meeting and detained in Port Elizabeth under the Terrorism Act. This arrest was one of several each on different charges, including various allegations that he had broken his banning orders and a charge of obstructing the course of justice by persuading witnesses in a political trial to change their evidence. Biko was thirty years old and healthy when he was arrested. He was first taken to Port Elizabeth prison and on 11 September was transferred to Pretoria where he died in hospital after assaults in police custody. The police officers who had held Biko were questioned but none of them confirmed his cause of death. Source: SAHO, Image Source: Cape Argus
