Playing around with the Canvas Source in MapLibreGL and using various composite operations like "lighter" to highlight areas with dense features.
These sorts of styles are something DeckGL does really well, so I was interested to see how easy/hard it was to replicate in MapLibre.
The code I have so far isn't too complicated (eg <100 lines), but effect/performance-wise isn't anywhere near as smooth as DeckGL.
Probably need to read up on some canvas optimization tips to see if I can eek any more performance out of it.
Great to be at @georabble in Canberra tonight.
Thanks to @Geoplexing aka Nova Systems for sponsoring.

I've had a lot of fun doing front-end work for this project over the past few years, which is now is moving into the next phase with PEXA 🎉
Here's a thread with a few learnings from working with maplibre-gl and property data 🧵
FrontierSI announced today it has facilitated a commercial partnership with @PEXA_GROUP for the commercialisation of an industry-first property analytics software! PEXA has taken 70% stake in Slate Analytics, a company founded by @_FrontierSI_ and @UNSW. bit.ly/fsi-commercial
We needed the ability to select parcels, a neat client-side approach for this was to use a hidden property centroid layer, doing a queryRenderedFeatures with a bbox filter, and then passing the results into a point-in-polygon check to get the relevant property ids.
Also a thank you to @pwramsey for the excellent pg-tileserv project which we used to serve vector tiles from PostGIS for the property boundaries and centroids.

Been having fun this week using TiTiler to generate map tiles of bathymetry data from cloud optimised geotiffs. Also created some neat hillshade effects with MapLibre-GL with a greyscale image out of TiTiler.
Thanks @_VincentS_ for sharing your work🙏🎉

I recently did an experiment with proj4js to see if I could reduce the bundle size by utilising dynamic imports. It worked and I've now got a core package than is ~1/3 the size (86kb v 26kb) 🎉
Additional code for projections is then loaded on-demand only when it's required.
The change to dynamic imports meant having to use a promise-based API for portions of the code which would be a breaking change to the existing proj4js library 😢
So while I was introducing breaking changes I tinkered with the API to make it a bit more intuitive (I hope).
I haven't yet published my code to npm but today I'm opening up my repo for comments to see if the js geo community is interested in taking this further and ideas on how it could/should work with proj4js.
So take a look and let me know what you think

Day 1 of COVID isolation for our boy, thankfully he's doing fine and has @LEGOMastersAU and @brickmanexp to inspire him, today's creation is a sloth hanging in a tree.
To celebrate #cloudnativegeo this week I finally polished off a little helper library for using @flatgeobuf with mapbox-gl or maplibre-gl maps.
Check it out at

Tinkering on a little javascript library to help work with STAC API endpoints.
Its aim is to reduce the barrier for web app devs from having to know the STAC API spec in detail, and make it a bit simpler to construct the most common requests.
