I’ve done a little bit of research about UK independent mills and suppliers who are currently explicitly unfortified or small-mill exempt. • N.R. Stoate & Sons (Dorset stone mill) Traditional stoneground flours. They operate below the 500-tonne threshold, so their white flours contain only wheat. Widely stocked by independent retailers such as The Good Food Project. • Prior’s Flour / Foster’s Mill Small mill that used the exemption to stop all fortification (including the older vitamins and minerals). Their white flour is now additive-free. • Gilchesters Organics (Northumberland) Organic stone-milled heritage and modern grains. They state their flours are free from additives, fortification or enhancers. Other small stone mills and members of the Traditional Cornmillers Guild or similar maps often fall under the exemption or produce only wholemeal/non-wheat flours. Retailers that curate unfortified ranges include Ratton Pantry and BakeryBits. Larger artisan mills such as Wessex Mill are fortifying their white wheat flours; their wholemeal and non-wheat options (e.g. white spelt) currently remain unfortified.

THE GOVERNMENT SAYS YOU WILL STILL HAVE A “CHOICE” OVER FOLIC ACID. SO EXPLAIN THIS. From 13 December 2026, folic acid is to be compulsorily added to non-wholemeal common wheat flour in the UK at 250 micrograms per 100g of flour. One of the government’s answers to people who don’t want to consume added folic acid is that they will still have a choice. Their own consultation response says: “individuals are able to avoid fortified flour if that is their choice.” How? The government says people can choose unfortified wholemeal flour and other non-wheat products instead. Fine. So I went shopping and deliberately bought Tesco Finest Sliced Wholemeal Bread. Not white bread. Not brown bread. WHOLEMEAL BREAD. Now look at the ingredients on the packet. The first ingredient is indeed: Wholemeal Wheat Flour But further down the ingredients is this: Wheat Flour [Wheat Flour, Calcium, Folic Acid, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin] So the “wholemeal bread” I deliberately selected already contains FOLIC ACID. That makes the government’s argument about consumer choice look considerably less straightforward than “just choose wholemeal”. And there is an even stranger question. Current government guidance on the Bread and Flour Regulations states: “the word ‘wholemeal’ is only allowed in the name of the bread when all of the flour used as an ingredient is wholemeal.” It goes on to say that a combination of wholemeal and white flour “must not be named ‘wholemeal bread’”. Yet here I am holding a packet which says: “Sliced wholemeal bread” while the ingredients appear to identify both “Wholemeal Wheat Flour” and a separate “Wheat Flour” containing folic acid. Perhaps Tesco has a technical explanation for this particular ingredient and its classification. I’d certainly like to hear it. But put the labelling issue to one side for a moment, because the wider point matters. The government has chosen a population-wide fortification policy The government’s response was that people would still be able to avoid fortified flour by consuming unfortified wholemeal flour and other products. But how meaningful is that “choice” for an ordinary shopper? Apparently it isn’t enough to walk into a supermarket and think: “I don’t want added folic acid, so I’ll buy wholemeal bread.” You need to turn over every packet, put your glasses on and inspect every flour ingredient to see whether folic acid has been added somewhere in the product. And this isn’t just about loaves of bread. Non-wholemeal wheat flour is used throughout the food supply: cakes, biscuits, pastries, pies, pizza bases, breadcrumbs, breaded chicken and fish, batter, sauces and countless processed foods. The government itself says the folic acid must appear in the ingredients list of pre-packed products containing the affected flour. In other words, the burden of exercising this supposed “choice” is being placed on the consumer. I’m not arguing here about whether pregnant women should take folic acid. We already know why folic acid before and during early pregnancy is recommended. I’m asking a different question: If the government relies on consumer choice as part of the justification for mandatory fortification, shouldn’t that choice actually be simple, obvious and practical? Because buying a packet prominently labelled WHOLEMEAL BREAD and then discovering FOLIC ACID in its ingredients demonstrates rather neatly why saying “people can choose wholemeal” isn’t an adequate answer. And before somebody says “well, just read the ingredients” — that’s precisely the point. If opting out requires checking the small print of every loaf, cake, pie, sauce, breadcrumb coating and processed product you buy, that is very different from the impression created by saying consumers remain free to choose wholemeal products instead. This packet is a perfect example. I chose wholemeal. I still got folic acid. So where, exactly, is the simple choice we were promised? @Tesco #folic

Great explanation on folic acid for the layman youtu.be/QVQGSPw5nA0 Also I’ve added a recommended template sent to me: Powerful! Worried about synthetic folic acid added to our food ? Share this far and wide and lets have the people push back on this ‘made negative order’ (where topic not debated just rubber stamped after industry report ). [Your name or organisation] [Address] [Date]  To: The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Cc: The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care; [your MP]  Subject: Request to delay mandatory folic acid fortification pending a public review of cancer, immune and B12 evidence  Dear Secretary of State,  I ask you to delay the mandatory addition of folic acid to non-wholemeal wheat flour, due to take effect on 13 December 2026, until an updated assessment of the benefits, possible harms and alternatives has been published and examined by Parliament. Adding folic acid to flour in essence is medicating the entire population without consent.  In 2025, approximately 649,525 babies were born alive in the UK, equivalent to 0.93% of the living population of 69,487,000. The proposed addition of folic acid to flour would expose consumers across the wider population on an ongoing basis to pursue a benefit measured against that annual number of live births. We ask ministers to publish how they weighed that difference in scale, including the potential effects of long-term exposure on older people, before the requirement begins.   I recognise the benefit of adequate folic acid before conception and in early pregnancy in reducing neural tube defects.  I ask the government to compare mandatory flour fortification with a properly funded programme that helps women who may become pregnant obtain and take supplements in time. This comparison must address unplanned pregnancies: waiting until pregnancy is confirmed may be too late to prevent some neural tube defects.  Roughly 30-60% of the population has some variation of the MTHFR gene, which impairs their ability to convert synthetic folic acid into the active, usable form (L-5-MTHF). For these individuals, unconverted folic acid can build up in the bloodstream. This could represent a cancer and metabolic disease risk.  Given the present burden of cancer, I ask for a clear public account of how cancer-related research was assessed. NHS England recorded 354,820 new cancer diagnoses in England in 2023, 8,605 more than in 2022. Those figures do not show that folic acid causes cancer. They underscore the importance of examining any plausible concern before adding a further source of folic acid to widely eaten foods.  One randomised trial involving people with a previous colorectal adenoma found a higher occurrence of multiple adenomas during later follow-up among participants assigned 1 mg of folic acid daily. This dose and study population differ from the proposed flour policy. Please explain how the trial was assessed alongside the wider evidence when considering cancer risk.  I also ask you to examine the findings for postmenopausal women. In a study of 105 healthy postmenopausal women, researchers detected unmetabolised folic acid in 78% of fasting blood samples. Women with detectable unmetabolised folic acid had, on average, approximately 23% lower natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity in the laboratory test used by the researchers. NK cells help identify and destroy abnormal or infected cells. This was an observed association in one study; it did not establish that folic acid caused the difference or that the women developed cancer. It does, however, warrant an explicit assessment of immune measures and exposure in older women before the policy starts.

I've just researched all these Indian flours. All but 2 do NOT contain folic acid. Natural folate instead. ATTA FLOUR DOES NOT CONTAIN FOLIC ACID AND CAN BE USED TO MAKE A LOAF OF BREAD 👇 Different flour, drug free options!
