My first publication! 🥳
It's published in @JPubEcon (w/ Benny Geys & @RuneJSorensen) and tackles a classic question:
Why do people vote in large elections, when the probability of casting a pivotal vote is virtually zero? 🗳️

Politicians: More Charitable Than You Think?
Local politicians donate more to charity than the general population—before, during, and after holding office. This is not due to background characteristics, and it seems not to be about signaling to voters.

The public sector is significantly overrepresented in elected bodies. Ben, Zuzana and I have a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Politics indicating this has negligible policy effects. Read the paper here: home.bi.no/fag89001/Bureaucr…. We have related papers in the APSR and JPART.
Politicians with higher education are 25% overrepresented in Norway's local councils, which causes an overall efficiency improvement of 6–13%. Check out my latest paper in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization to learn more.sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

"If You Are Not a Liberal When You Are Young, You

When Old, You Have No Brain". Is it true? Check out our new paper, forthcoming in Electoral Studies! home.bi.no/fag89001/Age%20an…
Our new Journal of Public Economics paper "The zero-rent society" shows that windfall revenues do not always induce rent extraction by political elites. Transparency is critical! sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
A follow up on the double motive effect: Benny Geys and I analyze voter participation in the American Political Science Review, and show that the public sector employees have higher rates of participation, partly as result of their interests as producers: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Why are government employees overrepresented in elected assemblies? Benny Geys, Zuzana Murdoch and I find they have a double motive to engage in politics. See our new paper in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory: academic.oup.com/jpart/advan….
Growing older makes people put less emphasis on protecting the environment. This is what Benny Geys, Tom-Reiel Heggedal and I show in a recent paper in the British Journal of Political Science: cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Education has a surprisingly large, causal effect of longevity. Especially men benefit from schooling. Education helps us avoid the accidental death! Our article is out in Social Science & Medicine: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
"Klima" er Statsbudsjettets verbale vinner; avstanden øker både til både "beredskap" og "innovasjon"!
Elderly people are less inclined to support environmental protection than younger persons do. Some believe that environmental support will raise when the elderly pass away. A paper recently accepted for the BJPS has depressing news for the hopeful: runesorensen.org.
A new paper with my colleague Benny Geys shows that the Norwegian 1995 gender quota reform did not change public policies. Neither did the induction of 40% women in the local executive boards have important spill-over effects on other elected bodies.: sciencedirect.com/science/ar… …
Eg les i VG at nokon er uro over nedlegging av sjukehus, vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/i/na…
Ein god nyheit: Erfaring frå 13 nedleggingar av fødeklinikkar syner at dei ikkje har effekt på dødelegheit i det heile. Sjå her: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/… og her også: biopen.bi.no/bi-xmlui/bitstr…
A longer life for men? Schooling helps Norwegian men live longer, but has no effect on women. The diagram below highlights a key point in a new Working Paper with Jostein Grytten and Irene Skau , posted on my website: runesorensen.org/
