Tremendous progress has been made, and you love to see it.
Skip is the first representative of the general public who doesn't actually represent mainstream tobacco control. The four previous holders of the position: - Scout (no first name), an anti-tobacco LGBT activist. - Pebbles Fagan, an anti-tobacco professor engaged in tobacco research (as members of the general public do). - Sonia Duffy, an anti-tobacco nursing professor. - Patricia Nez Henderson, an anti-tobacco Native American activist who wants to "decolonize tobacco" and feels unsafe being in the same room as the tobacco industry.

AI generated music is 1000x better than real music. Today I canceled Spotify and SiriusXM because I finally tested Suno. What sold me was the first prompt I gave it: ā€œMy favorite artists are A Day to Remember, Bring Me The Horizon, Spiritbox, Bad Omens, and Sleep Token. Analyze all their hits and generate a song I’m likely to love based on those artists.ā€ It one shots an absolute banger in 10 seconds. I'll link the song in the next tweet for anyone curious. Why would I ever go back to Spotify/SiriusXM when I can generate music perfectly tailored to my taste on command, for free? Not affiliated with Suno in any way btw, it was just one of those moments where I was so impressed with AI’s capability I had to say something about it.

So it seems my reply to @jkelovuori's reply has been hidden by @ACSCAN. See also: That didn't pan out.
Perhaps the well-intentioned, albeit terribly confused people at @ACSCAN will favor me with a response this time around? Hope springs eternal.

Dr. Au, I would like to invite you to a facilitated Zoom conversation with Dr. Gardner and 1-2 other experts in this field, including myself — whom you may at this juncture understandably view with skepticism based on the information you have been provided — simply to discuss the science and related policy issues. I would be delighted to arrange this with your staff if you would be so kind as to have them contact me at [email protected]. Respectfully, Cliff Douglas

Sky News has a short video following yesterday's article by Boidin et al in JAMA Cardiology. Here's a clip from it featuring Dr. Matthew Evison, a Professor of Respiratory Medicine and one of the authors.

I am astounded that this absurd Palau-fronted nicotine prohibition initiative is being taken seriously by what appears to be an expanding cult of drug war ideologues. See my brief comment on the LinkedIn post of its leading proponent, @AshOrg lnkd.in/p/ec_ibsZC

Replying to @ACSCAN @FDATobacco
I'm genuinely curious. Why would your organization be opposed to the FDA's authorization of products that have the potential to reduce the burden of cancer by displacing cigarettes?

You should listen to Prof. Kenneth Warner instead of obsessing about whether or not companies you hate are authorized to market far less harmful alternatives to cigarettes (which cause cancer just in case you forgot). sph.umich.edu/news/2021posts…

Enough nicotine to satisfy cravings can help a product replace lethal cigarettes and save lives. More nicotine does not automatically mean more harm. My new article examines why confusing nicotine delivery with smoking-related harm matters so much. cliffdoug.substack.com/p/nic…

Well, that's inconvenient. This 2025-26 survey of ~400k Australians shows daily smoking prevalence at 10.1%, almost double the recent semi-official estimate and far better aligned with the Roy Morgan estimate of 12.1% in 2025. @Bludn_Gore @jkelovuori roymorgan.com/findings/9937-…
I'm posting this for Alan Gor. "The 2026 Index estimates daily smoking among Australians aged 15 and over at 10.1%, compared with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s 5.6% estimate." 09algor.substack.com/p/befor… Cc @jamomartin @drjoesDIYhealth

🌐 A proposal from one small country could change the rules for nicotine worldwide! The Pacific state of Palau has asked the UN to review whether nicotine should be placed under international drug control, under the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. The use of controlled substances is largely restricted to medical and scientific purposes. If nicotine were added, every country that is party to the convention would have to change its laws. Including the Czech Republic. šŸ”¬ The first step is a review by the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD). Its recommendation then goes to the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, which makes the final decision. That is why the evidence the committee receives matters so much. Nicotine is addictive, and that matters. But it is just as important to assess how individual products differ, how harmful each of them is, how nicotine is used in treatment, and what impact scheduling would have. āš–ļø At RATIO, we have published an analysis of the proposal. It also warns that people could lose access to less harmful alternatives to cigarettes and that the black market could grow. We recommend that governments involve experts in public health, international law and law enforcement in preparing their submissions, and submit their evidence on time. The groundwork for later decisions is being laid right now. Those who speak up early have more influence! šŸ“– Read our analysis: rationalpolicy.eu/en/news/in… #nicotine #regulation #publichealth #drugpolicy
