We are proud to celebrate an outstanding achievement by Rui Wu, a senior majoring in CS, who is presenting his research paper at the prestigious Conference on Language Modeling (COLM) 2026 this week!
1/ We gave an LLM write access to its unit tests during RL, never prompting it to use it 🔓
It tried to hack and failed, retreated to legitimate solving… then came back and hacked successfully 📈
Why this rebound happens + a training-time fix 🧵

Proud of my @RutgersCS undergrad @Chen94751623484 for this work! 🎓🔥
No NaNs ≠ correct gradients. Even after fixing the visible training instability, large errors can hide in the attention backward.
The culprit: BF16 rounding breaks a zero-sum conservation law. A small rounding error can overwhelm the true gradient as keys grow and attention sharpens.
🛠️ GProj restores that law after rounding. In our experiments: query/key gradient accuracy and final loss on par with FP32 attention, with just ~4.7% extra step time.
🔍 Training looks healthy? Check the backward pass anyway.
We trained an LLM with FlashAttention-3 in BF16 🔥 Training looked healthy for a long time. Then the grad norm shot up 1000× 📈 and the loss ended 0.2 nats above FP32 attention. Not a single NaN 😶
The cause is in the attention backward 🧵
