⚖️ We’ve updated our sanctions policy. The revised policy comes into effect on 2 March. It guides panels in deciding what action, if any, is appropriate when serious concerns are raised, with one clear purpose: to protect the public. Read about the ten key changes and the consultation outcome on our website: hcpc-uk.org/news-and-events/… #SanctionsPolicy

As part of #CPDWeek2026, we are raising awareness of the impact of sexual misconduct and highlighting our work to improve sexual safety. Our sexual safety hub brings together both new and existing resources to support registrants in reflecting and learning. It provides clear guidance on professional boundaries, expected standards and where to seek help and support. Reflective practice is central to CPD. Taking time to reflect on maintaining appropriate boundaries and behaviours strengthens safe and effective practice. View our explainer on what sexual safety means in a professional context and explore the full range of resources on our dedicated hub: hcpc-uk.org/sexual-safety

🤔 So what do we mean by CPD? It's basically how you keep your skills sharp and your knowledge current: 'continuing professional development'. It's an essential part of safe and effective practice. It could be training, discussing, reading, reflecting, having a learning under supervision - any activity that you learn and develop from. It needs to be regular, outcome focused and self-directed. It needs to benefit your service users and your practice. Aside from that, it can be anything!  👉 Browse our support: hcpc-uk.org/cpd/cpd-resource…

No, it’s generally considered not right for an unelected chamber to go against the will of the people, which can be discerned by looking at which party they voted for and the positions of this party at the time of the election. After the 1945 general election, the Leader of the Tory-dominated House of Lords, the viscount Camborne (later Lord Salisbury), agreed they wouldn’t block any pledges in Atlee’s manifesto to which Tory peers were opposed. In 2006, a report of the Joint Committee on Conventions suggested that the scope of the Salisbury Convention had sometimes been expanded in Peers’ minds to cover any government Bill. Assisted dying was not a manifesto commitment or even a government bill, and therefore we don’t know what the will of the people is in this case. Recent polling is all over the place which suggests the people’s will isn’t really settled in the matter. consoc.org.uk/what-is-salisb…
I don’t support the Assisted Dying Bill and voted against it, but it is not right for the unelected chamber to block the commons.

Canada’s response on 9/11 became one of the most remarkable civilian‑led humanitarian efforts in modern history. When the United States closed its airspace after the attacks, Transport Canada immediately activated Operation Yellow Ribbon, directing incoming international flights away from potential US targets and safely onto Canadian runways. Airports in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and British Columbia suddenly became global crossroads, receiving aircraft that had been mid‑ocean only minutes earlier. Gander alone took in thirty‑eight planes carrying more than six thousand passengers and crew, a staggering number for a town of barely ten thousand people. What followed was an extraordinary display of community action. More than two hundred diverted flights brought over thirty thousand stranded travelers into Canada within hours. Schools, churches, gyms, and community centers were transformed into temporary shelters. Local bus drivers, who had been on strike, ended their walkout on the spot to help transport passengers. Pharmacies filled prescriptions for free, restaurants cooked nonstop, and families opened their homes to complete strangers. In Gander, Lewisporte, Halifax, Vancouver, and dozens of smaller towns, Canadians improvised a nationwide hospitality network that lasted for days. The impact of Operation Yellow Ribbon went far beyond logistics. Many passengers later described it as the moment they regained a sense of safety and humanity after the terror of 9/11. The kindness they received became the basis for lifelong friendships, annual reunions, and even charitable foundations.
