I still maintain that the only difference between an insurance actuary and a bookmaker is the nature of the event/outcome being gambled upon. And once you know this you can use it in useful ways. Last season my football team went 3-0 up in the first leg of a knockout competition* and one of the other teams we knew we'd meet in the next stage also took a substantial lead. So my mates bought the cheapest return flights for that putative game- about 100 quid- and then hedged by putting 7 quid on our opponents at 16-1 and a fiver on the other game at 20-1 or something. This was *much* cheaper than buying the fully refundable flights which were £200+. *Not being vague to protect my identity as obviously I post under my own name, just CBA to google the exact details as I've forgotten it now
An LA hospitality group runs 25 bars, many of them right by Dodger Stadium. Every extra playoff game means packed bars. An early exit means lost revenue they were counting on. So they hedged it. They put $60,000 on Kalshi on the Dodgers *not* making the World Series. The Dodgers lost the NLCS to the Brewers. The position returned nearly 2x, helping cover the playoff business that *never* came. A Columbia law professor told Fortune it works like “a form of bespoke insurance.” Read the full story here: fortune.com/2026/10/19/predi…

After being detained in the ground for 90 minutes after the final whistle I was eventually allowed to leave to make the 200 yard walk back to my hotel. And I'm more enraged about it now, if anything. This is a matter of sporting principle. When two opposing football teams meet it's customary that away fans are allowed to attend, for obvious reasons of sporting fairness. But UEFA don't seem to give the slightest toss about us away fans. They demonstrated that when they didn't insist that Villa play their game against Maccabi behind closed doors or in a neutral ground when West Midlands Police banned their away supporters. Israeili and Ukranian teams have to fulfil their 'home' fixtures in neutral countries because it's apparently not fair to expect away fans to risk being bombed by Russia or Hamas. But clubs in countries whose arsehole police make being a visiting fan an utterly miserable experience are fine, apparently. I'm impotently raging here; I made my feelings known politely but stridently to the Palace reps at the ground and asked them to protest to UEFA, but clearly they can't do much. Following your team around Europe should be a joyous experience, not a miserable and stressful one.
So the Lyon-Palace maych finished half an hour ago. We lost, no drama. We're all still sat here for no obvious reason that I can tell. UEFA seriously need to crack down on this shit. Isreali and Ukranian teams play their home games in neutral countries as apparently away fans wouldn't be safe. But if an apparently peaceful and competent country like France can't promise the same why are they allowed to host games?

For the avoidance of doubt I'd absolutely have gone to Kyiv for the Dynamo game last season. Lublin is great, but Slava Ukraini!

A pure distillation of NIMBYism. “Don’t build the flats, or they’ll spoil the view from *checks notes* the station platform” They’ve even done the “we support the need for more housing but not here” line

I appreciate that the bodycam footage is Very Bad and nobody particularly cares about the sentencing remarks right now, but another of my afflictions is mild autism, and nobody with a functioning brain should be happy that sentences are based on this sort of woke bollocks.

For years dodgy companies sold dangerous materials and useless regulators did not do their jobs. 72 people were killed by this lying and incompetence at Grenfell. 9 years later no one has been charged. There was another problem. These dangerous materials were everywhere. They needed to be removed so Grenfell didn't happen again. Can the companies who caused the crisis be held responsible? Of course not. What about the regulators who didn't do their job? Don't be silly. Instead, the government settled on adding yet another tax on housebuilding, which will now push up prices for everyone. 9 years on those responsible for 72 deaths are yet to face justice but you have to pay more for a new home.
The Building Safety Levy goes live today. Here’s CBRE’s estimate of what it will cost developers of a typical new home in a selection of local authorities.

Insider pro-tip: Train Operating Companies care about their customers and employ helpful folk like this to try and minimise the fallout from cancellations. Sheep on the line are a legitimate threat to the safety of the train. If you just ask nicely they will do their best to help you out. I ended up at Kings Cross only 15 minutes late, and I'm so delighted by the help from @northernassist that I'm not going to claim the Delay Repay 🤣

@northernassist Hi I am trying to get from Wylam to Newcastle to catch a train to London. The 1527 has been cancelled due to sheep on the line apparently, however fast trains seem to still be running through here. Any advice? Any chance of getting one of the fast trains to stop here, like maybe 1J82 that's due through in 15 mins?

Genuinely love this. I overcommitted to gin I and nearly vomitted on Elaine Paige. Happily, I merely managed called her a cunt before being escorted out and doing it in the gutter.

Oh no. This one one of the worst policies ever. Huge profits for housebuilders. Persimmon FGS. Horrible overpriced deals in shitty leaseholds for buyers. Why can't they learn.

You lied about Land Value Tax, you mutated it into a ridiculous Mansion Tax. Now you’re juicing the market with a new Help to Sell. Nobody voted for you or any of your policies. Go. Sooner than later.

This is shameful. It’s so shameful it looks purposeful. This is the regime which openly slaughtered tens of thousands of innocent civilians for *protesting* & continues to put them to death daily. Teenagers sent to the gallows. Ed Miliband is a disgrace.

A reflection on my conversations with left-wing university students: Last week, I went to speak at the University of Exeter’s Debating Union, arguing against the motion “capitalism has failed the working class.” My co-debater @JasperOstle and I made what I thought was a compelling case. We spoke of infant mortality rates, medicine, social mobility, life-saving technologies, and for a future of prosperity and abundance. After the debate, I went to the student bar and spoke to a few students who disagreed with my position, many of whom were socialists, and all of whom were respectful and intellectually curious. Interestingly, they thought supporting “capitalism” meant supporting the status quo. We discussed high housing costs, for example, which most would agree are a problem of government artificially restricting supply. But the students said that this was an example of the government operating in a “capitalist” system. We discussed government subsidies and tax breaks and regulatory capture, which they also thought were examples of “capitalism.” Of course, the Government giving out subsidies or tax breaks or other privileges to particular businesses or industries, stopping housing development, and manipulating the market is quite the opposite of what I would call “capitalism.” Perhaps that term is so corrupted that we ought to do away with it altogether. I’ve come away from those conversations with that specific problem in mind. Those of us that believe in free markets have failed to explain the difference between free markets and the status quo. Instead, many young people think that the only political options to choose from are different types of big government.
