I thought it was Alison Roman-related, tbh.
Things first began to feel off in March, but it wasn’t only because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Writer Rachel Handler saw a sudden decline in America’s supply of dry, store-bought bucatini in New York. “The missing bucatini felt different,” writes Handler. “It was specific. Frightening. Why bucatini? Why now? Why us?” Bucatini is like spaghetti, but thicker and with a hole in it. It’s great at absorbing sauces, and is beloved by pasta connoisseurs. Bon Appétit deemed it the “best long pasta,” and New York City pasta magnate Frank Prisinzano said, “Lol it’s spaghetti with a hole in it. Who doesn’t like that?” When Handler discovered the shortage wasn’t just in New York City, she felt an obligation to solve the mystery of the disappearing bucatini. And it turned out the mystery went far deeper than she could have imagined. Revisit Handler’s 2020 investigation into the bucatini supply chain, and the “Big Pasta” industry: nymag.visitlink.me/rO4NNe

The owners of this building on Cabrini Blvd in Manhattan are suing the state in an effort to get the US Supreme Court to overturn NY's rent laws Others apartments in the building were leased for $2,250 (1-BR) to $3,200 (2-BR) earlier this year, per StreetEasy
These NYC apartments are standing empty, not because the owners don't want to rent them, but because rent stabilization laws prohibit them from charging enough to earn back the costs of necessary repairs. My latest for @WSJFreeEx

Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

For months, used booksellers around the world have been reporting suspicious new bulk orders of books they believe to be going to Anthropic for “destructive scanning” to train AI. This New York bookseller says she got a similar spike in odd orders: hellgatenyc.com/ai-anthropic…

New: Amid this week’s revelation that a DSA leader lives in a $1.5M home, I visited the anarchist Williamsburg bookstore Property is Theft to see how their patrons are taking the news. gothamist.com/news/at-anarch…

Three wrongfully convicted men spent a total of more than 70 years in prison. What happened to the prosecutors? Nothing. "Charles Testagrossa and Brad Leventhal, left their government positions shortly after the judge’s ruling came down in 2021, and their attorneys say they’ve suffered irreparable professional fallout. But they have faced no official, publicly disclosed discipline from their former offices or the system charged with policing their profession."

Ahhh yes. The famously un-romanticized city of San Francisco.
We ought to romanticize SF more if we ever want this city to be actually cool
