"At the heart of the tobacco industry’s playbook is identity repositioning. Rather than relying on overt advertising, companies now embed nicotine products into aspirational lifestyles, co-opting feminist language to present smoking as a symbol of autonomy and modernity rather than a driver of addiction and disease. In South Africa, 30% of women report seeing influencers promote tobacco or nicotine products online, the highest rate across a five-country Africa study. High levels of entertainment and digital media exposure compound this effect: 84% of respondents report seeing tobacco use in television, film and streaming content." Ladies! Tobacco companies have shifted from cigarettes to flavoured and discreet devices. Flavours such as berry and vanilla mask the harshness of tobacco, while packaging mimics cosmetics, which aligns with young women's modern day lifestyle aesthetics. 👇citizen.co.za/news/opinion/n…

As the Health Committee commence with Tobacco Control Bill clause-by-clause deliberations, we plead for the committee to resist attempts to water down the Bill. The evidence-based provisions currently in the Bill are critical in protecting public health for SA. @ParliamentofRSA

The third term is in full swing and so, the smell of strawberry bubblegum and other flavors has made its way through South African school corridors. Vape aerosols are flavored to attract young people to potential nicotine addiction. E-cigs need to be regulated to save lives.

CIVIL SOCIETY RAISES ALARM OVER RETURN OF TOBACCO CONTROL BILL FOR RECONSIDERATION Civil society organizations have expressed deep concern over the decision to return Zambia's Tobacco Control Bill for reconsideration after Parliament had already passed the legislation, warning that the move threatens nearly two decades of work to strengthen tobacco regulation and protect public health. Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Tobacco Control Consortium of Zambia (TCCZ) Patron Professor Fastone Goma said the decision had left public health advocates questioning why the Bill had been sent back after completing all legislative processes and following the dissolution of the 13th National Assembly. The Tobacco Control Bill, N.A.B. No. 40 of 2025, was passed by Parliament on May 4, 2026, after years of consultations involving government ministries, civil society organizations, academics, faith-based organizations, youth groups and representatives of the tobacco industry. The third school term has kicked off and friends have reconnected once again. When catching up about the holidays and what the rest of the year holds, don't let friends pressure you into hitting that choef/vape. For every puff they insist you take, is a puff towards addiction.

SA scored 64 on the 2025 TII index, reflecting continued tobacco industry interference within the policy environment. While these findings reflects marginal change, SA's score demonstrates persistent vulnerabilities in implementing WHO FCTC Article 5.3 safeguards. @ggtc
