San Diego State had too much athleticism, skill and power for Long Beach State, winning exhibition 92-67. Six double-digit scorers: Davis 14, Harrington 13, Gladden, Cherry, Skoric 11 apiece and Sy 10. 7 assists for Gladden.
And then there were four.
Brewers' World Series title-winning win leaves MLB with four active franchises that have not won the Fall Classic.
From oldest to youngest:
Padres (1969), Mariners ('77), Rockies ('93), Rays ('98).
Who's next?
Former Padres minor leaguer Trevor Megill closes out a 4-1, Game 5 victory tonight to give the Milwaukee Brewers their first World Series title.
Padres fans: does this make you more hopeful that the Padres someday will get it done?
Nice first half for San Diego State PG Chance Gladden (11 pts on 4 for 5, 5 assists) and C Bear Cherry (9 pts, 3 blocked shots).
Aztecs lead Long Beach State, 45-38, in exhibition.
San Diego State’s Brian Dutcher describes 6-9 F Luka Skoric, 23, as a shooter. Croatia played professionally in Europe. Played 10 minutes v USCin first game after missing practices with groin injury. More tonight v Long Beach St.
San Diego State junior guard Latrell Davis (6-3, 215) redshirted last year. Sparked team off bench in exhibition v USC. Shoulder issue kept him from starting. Profiles as above average D and offense.
The only soft spot for the Brewers this postseason has been their infield defense. They've overcome it for the most part.
Rays tonight won Game 4 of World Series, 4-3 in 12 innings, to join Padres as the only teams to beat Brewers in this postseason.
Padres were a 4-3 winner in Game 3 of NLDS.
Chandler Simpson (Rays), Michael King (Padres) had key success vs. Brewers, who are 10-2 in postseason.

If there was a Mount Rushmore of ball writers, Ross Newhan would be on it. He was a giant in the biz, a Hall-of-Famer who spent much of his 43-year career covering @MLB for the LA Times. He was a mentor to myself and so many others, a friend to all. Ross died today at 89. RIP💔

San Diego State's not-close exhibition L wasn't without bright developments.
But the huge gap in payroll is apt to show up on the basketball court when the opponent is Arizona, last years's title-bound Michigan team and this year's USC club.

As good as starting RHP Andy Ashby was for Padres, nephew Aaron Ashby is better for Brewers.
Lefty has roasted hitters in NLDS, NLCS, World Series. Four plus-pitches. Three, four, six, nine outs -- whatever's needed. 105 innings on the year.
Old school, new school, any school.
San Diego State guard Elzie Harrington, matching up well athletically, pulls off a chasedown block against USC.
Certainly, he’s all the way back (and then some) from the injury that sidelined him late last season.
Elzie Harrington had a nice first half for San Diego State. The 6-foot-5 sophomore guard from Long Beach matched up well athletically with USC. Seven points, one rebound, one assist. Quick first step.
Sr. Jeremiah Cherry powered up for eight points.
USC length throughout most of its rotating lineup is causing problems for San Diego State in tonight’s exhibition.
