Snake oil salesmen never went away.
Now they're called "wellness coaches" "alternative/integrative medicine practitioners," "energy medicine healers," etc.
Certification is a great way to dupe patients.
It obviates expertise, codes of ethics, and legal standards of practice.

After his self-help events left a total of 4 people dead and dozens injured, @JamesARay served less than 2 years in prison...& jumped right back into the self-help industry upon his release.

The way predatory self-help gurus-- of all genders-- specifically target women goes way back.
Predatory self-help gurus & programs regularly exploit cultural misogyny and gender tropes in much the same way multilevel marketing companies do.
@DrDoyleSays and Jean chatted about the experience of women with self-help. Everything from the weird ways self-improvement is marketed at women (hint, it's not like it is for men!), sexual assault and self-help, and MLMs...
