People rarely make emotional mistakes when backtesting. After 3 losses in a row, it’s a lot harder to stay patient and wait for the next good setup. Most traders will go on tilt and start trying to make their losses back. When backtesting, you can just skip to the next day or session. Live trading is different because you have to deal with those emotions in real time. His strategy clearly works, but he let his emotions get the better of him and started deviating from his plan. At that point, he’s no longer trading his strategy, he’s trading his ego.
