Just a reminder that Canada's first ever goal in Men's World Cup history was scored by a kid who fled a war, came to Canada as a refugee, was welcomed by Canadians, learned English, and grew up playing soccer in the snow. It's what Canada does. 🇨🇦

“Race is a fiction, racism is real.” Nothing in our legal education prepared us to understand how this works in practice. So we taught it to ourselves, in struggle. And we were just kids. So proud to call @sandylocks my sister.
“Critical race theory has been and was a study of the way law contributes to inequality,” @sandylocks says at #TAF22. “We looked at how law actually helped create what we think race is, and helped imbue that with material consequences.” on.theatln.tc/Zfji80o

If you're a journalist about to repeat the line that Justice O’Bonsawin's appointment is some kind of tradeoff or loss for the Court because without Moldaver J, the bench now lacks an "expert in criminal law" (1/?), some food for thought:

Some stars go out with a bang. In these images of the Southern Ring planetary nebula, @NASAWebb shows a dying star cloaked by dust and layers of light. Explore this star's final performance at nasa.gov/webbfirstimages #UnfoldTheUniverse.

It's here–the deepest, sharpest infrared view of the universe to date: Webb's First Deep Field. Previewed by @POTUS on July 11, it shows galaxies once invisible to us. The full set of @NASAWebb's first full-color images & data will be revealed July 12: nasa.gov/webbfirstimages
The @Cour_superieure then heard from @CABLNational. Their counsel reminded the Court that the right to equality as guaranteed by the Charter included the right to equality before and under the law and the right the equal protection and equal benefit of the law.

Intervening in this case on behalf of @CABLNational reminded me of @mari_matsuda's wonderful speech "When the First Quail Calls: Multiple Consciousness as a Jurisprudential Method", a text that got me through law school. Today was a day to stand inside the courtroom doors.
TRIAL RECAP - RACIAL PROFILING CHALLENGE: Our pro-bono counsel Bruce Johnson concluded his arguments and exposed why the Court should declare the contested police powers unconstitutional despite the SCC’s decision in Ladouceur. #RacialProfiling #cdnpoli #AssNat

Such a pleasure to see @lex_is all week in court! We were lucky enough on our end to intervene as friend of the court for @CABLNational. We couldn't have made our (small) contribution to the debate without the work of the parties and their counsel to bring this case to court.
Today we wrapped up our last day of a 5+ week trial in Luamba c. PGC et PGQ (we represent @cancivlib as a conservatory intervener). Really everything you could want in a case: a brilliant judge, great opposing counsel, lovely colleagues, fantastic and meaningful legal questions.

Thankfully, the #stopsop benchers’ motion to eliminate the professional name reader at calls to the bar (hired so that names can be correctly pronounced) has failed. Thank you @SABAToronto for your very important submission on this important equity issue.
