Nur Omar Mohamed came to America as a refugee in the 1990s, and the New York Post now reports he was a full colonel in dictator Siad Barreโs army until the regime fell, the same army that leveled Hargeisa and killed tens of thousands of Isaaq civilians in what Somaliland calls its forgotten genocide.
Saeed Ibrahim, founder of the Somaliland Chronicle, says the colonel was posted to Hargeisa while the city was being shelled, and he puts the question plainly:
โPerpetrators cannot claim to be refugees at the same time alongside the same people that they brutalized.โ
Nobody has shown the colonel personally took part in the killings, and he died in 2020.
Saeedโs point is narrower: when a regime collapses, its officers hide among the people they ran from, and Washington deported one Barre-era colonel last year who was found driving for Uber.
The congresswoman denies wrongdoing and calls the October 12 raid political.
Whether her fatherโs rank was ever disclosed on those forms is now the question the case may turn on.

๐จBREAKING: A Somali imam who runs a mosque in Calgary is still wanted in Minnesota on criminal sexual conduct charges from nearly 20 years ago.
Abdi Elmy Hersy worked as a respiratory therapist at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury in 2006. Two female patients alleged he fondled them under their gowns during treatments and made sexual propositions. Washington County charged him with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct and criminal abuse. He left the United States, obtained refugee status in Canada, and an active arrest warrant remains.
Hersy, who now presents himself as Sheikh Abdi Hersy, has denied the allegations. He has said he wants to return to face the charges but claims immigration issues have prevented him from clearing his name. Canada previously moved to strip his refugee protection because of the U.S. warrant, but he successfully challenged that decision in Federal Court and kept his status.
He has served as an imam at Abu Bakr Musalla in Calgary and posts frequent religious and political commentary on Somali affairs. Minnesota revoked his respiratory therapist license years ago. The original charges have never been resolved in a U.S. court.
The case has drawn renewed attention as people note his continued public role despite the outstanding warrant.

A former Somaliland minister says Ilhan Omar leaked details of a House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting to Somali leaders while she was on the Committee.
Ali Hassan Muhammad, former Minister of Information, posted that Omar visited the region in late 2022, shared information about a meeting with Somalilandโs president, and pushed Somali leaders to act against Somaliland before U.S. ties strengthened. Fighting broke out in February 2023. Hundreds were killed and thousands displaced.
Omar previously served on the Foreign Affairs Committee and held a clearance.
If this is accurate Ilhan won't just be deported, she will be behind bars.
