Our conversations are becoming toxic and harmful rather than clarifying and informative. The next time you discuss theology or cultural issues, audit yourself and consider whether you need to rethink your approach.

How can you talk with someone who doesn’t care about eternity? 1. Clarify What They Mean Ask, “What do you mean you’re fine with not knowing or not looking into it?” People may mean different things when they say they don’t care. 2. Ask Why Ask, “Why don’t you care?” Then listen. Their answer may reveal more about what they believe or what they value. 3. Open the Door to Reflection Ask, “What do you think happens when you die?” If they share an answer, follow up: “Why do you think that’s what’s going to happen when you die?” 4. Don’t Force the Conversation Some people may remain apathetic. Probe with questions, look for an opening, and let them go if there isn’t one. Hear more on the October 19, 2026 #STRask podcast.

If Christianity is true, why would God deliver it to us in a book left up to so many interpretations and that condones so many awful practices? 1. God communicates through language and history. His message had to make sense to people in a particular culture and time. 2. A text written in one time and culture can be misunderstood later. Language and cultural assumptions change. That problem comes with any writing. 3. Many interpretations don’t mean the main teachings are unclear. Some details are less clear, but the central issues can be understood by taking the whole text seriously. 4. A short list of facts could be clearer, but it would lack the Bible’s depth and beauty. 5. The Bible’s laws sometimes regulate evil without prescribing God’s ideal. Jesus made this distinction when he said divorce was permitted because of hard hearts, not because it was the ideal. 6. The Garden shows the ideal. There is no slavery, violence, or sin. The later laws address what happens after people rebel against God and move them back toward that ideal. Here are four ways you can have a conversation without sounding “scripted”: 1. Start with Questions Think of tactics as a flexible framework. Ask, “What do you mean by that?” and “How did you come to that conclusion?” These questions draw out the other person’s ideas and reasons. 2. Plan Ahead Anticipate the questions and objections that may come up. Thinking through possible responses can help you engage with confidence. 3. Listen Well Don’t wait for a certain word so you can deliver a memorized response. Make sure your answer fits what the person is actually saying. 4. Practice, Then Adapt Practicing a response is like practicing musical scales. You may not use it in exactly the same format each time, but practice helps you respond when you need to. Standards don’t have enforceability all by themselves. An essential element of morality is obligation. We’re obligated to people, not things.

#STRaks Greg and Amy answer questions about why God would give us an unclear book that condones awful practices, and how we can know that commands for the Israelites to kill all the inhabitants of a city were truly commands from God rather than from men who falsely attributed their own commands to God. “There aren’t really so many interpretations if you actually look at the text. When you come across people with radically different interpretations, either they have some other source of authority or they’re taking things out of context or discounting the Bible.“ – Amy Hall

The world is flashy. It looks appealing and promises more freedom to follow your desires. The world offers fewer restrictions. Today people call it “you do you.” In the ’60s it was “do your own thing.” The world’s appeal goes back to the garden. If you get God out of the picture, you can say, “I’m going to do what I want to do.” BUT, the world gives only temporal benefit. “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26).
