Correctional facilities present complex security requirements, with multiple physical barriers, controlled access points, and the need to monitor activity on both sides of the perimeter. From fence lines and gates to isolation zones, each area presents distinct challenges for maintaining effective detection coverage. A well-designed perimeter intrusion detection strategy accounts for these differences, accurately detecting when and where activity occurs, minimizing nuisance alarms, and supporting efficient security operations. Myth: False alarms and nuisance alarms are the same thing. Fact: A false alarm occurs without an actual physical event. A nuisance alarm is caused by a real event that does not represent a security threat. The distinction matters, as false and nuisance alarms have different causes that require different approaches to address them. For nuisance alarms, the focus is on the source of the unwanted detection. Site conditions, vegetation, wildlife, environmental activity, system design or configuration may need to be evaluated. For false alarms, the focus shifts to evaluating the system components. Correctly distinguishing between false and nuisance alarms direct corrective action where it belongs, supporting better alarm quality and more effective operator response. #PerimeterSecurity #IntrusionDetection #PIDS #SecurityOperations #SouthwestMicrowave

Not every perimeter application requires long-range detection. Gates, loading docks, building approaches, corridors, and other confined areas can present their own security challenges, requiring coverage designed specifically for smaller spaces. The INTREPID™ MS30-POE-S short-range digital microwave transceiver provides localized coverage for these applications, with software-defined zones and adjustable detection angles from 30° to 120°. With directional tracking for approaching and receding targets, crawling detection, and PoE connectivity, the MS30-POE-S provides a flexible option for securing shorter perimeter segments and defined areas. What is Volumetric Detection? Volumetric detection is a perimeter security method that creates a three-dimensional protected area with width, height, and depth. When unauthorized movement occurs within that space, an alarm is generated. Microwave sensors and LiDAR are examples of technologies that use volumetric detection to provide coverage across open areas, gates, vehicle entrances, loading docks, rooftops, and sally ports.
