The chapter looks into the use of the term “EU Party” in the EU’s bilateral mixed trade agreements, identifying patterns based on the nature of the agreement and the number of non-EU treaty partners.

Based on this analysis, the chapter then considers the relevance of the term for the EU and its Member States’ international law status as treaty parties “in their own right”.
