Stop trying to be replaceable.
Start becoming indispensable.
The biggest lesson from Seth Godin’s Linchpin:
The world doesn’t just reward people who follow instructions. It rewards people who think independently, solve problems, and create value where others see nothing.
Two people can have the same job and salary.
One waits for instructions and stops there.
The other notices problems, owns them, and improves things without being asked.
That’s the difference between doing a job and becoming a linchpin.
1)Stop waiting for permission.
Identify a problem, build a solution, and show people what you can do before anyone asks.
2)Become a problem solver, not just a task completer.
Don’t just tell people what you can do. Show them what problems you can solve.
3)Treat your work like art.
Bring your ideas, judgment, and personality. Don’t settle for the bare minimum.
4)Don’t let fear make every decision.
Publish the post. Send the pitch. Build the first version. You can learn from a failed attempt. You can’t learn from an opportunity you never pursue.
5)Ideas are worthless if you never ship them.
Execution turns potential into evidence. Evidence beats promises.
6)Give people a reason to trust you.
Share useful information. Follow through. Make people’s lives easier. Trust unlocks opportunities that qualifications alone rarely do.
7)Learn to work through uncertainty.
You don’t need to know everything. You need to be willing to figure things out when the plan falls apart.
In a world where AI handles more routine work, simply knowing how to do something isn’t enough.
Your judgment, creativity, relationships, and willingness to take responsibility become the real advantage.
Stop focusing only on becoming qualified. Start focusing on becoming genuinely useful.
Find a problem. Take responsibility. Create something useful. Ship it. Learn. Repeat.
You can start today.
What’s one skill or quality that makes someone truly indispensable today?
