A puzzling thing about all this grocery uproar:
- Roughly 6-8% of the median US household's income is spent on groceries, so like $4000 a year
- Even if applied to literally all groceries a person buys, a 15% discount is like $600 a year, which honestly is... kind of pathetic?
I've made a little blog post about using partial pooling to carefully estimate interaction effects for linear models. Here it's for estimating alpha in factor models, but the technique is fairly general and can be improved on. May edit in the future.

The novelty for interactions is that there are multiple ways to refer to similarity (a lattice of ways), which each give a new mean datapoint, so I added a simple heuristic fix to keep everything working,
I've been doing a lot of thinking and I feel like the goal of learning any advanced topic is to better understand the basics. One of my favorite stories is that a chef's hat represents the number of ways they can cook an egg. I don't see the opportunities a chef does when I look
a plethora of rabbit holes to fall into, and an excitement for the future. I can only recall one other event that has caused me to feel this way, and I use it to divide my life between before and after. It’s too early to speak in absolutes, but reading your book has already

this is a 1996 guide on how to help someone use a computer. it’s strikingly resonant with ‘how to be a parent’, or really ‘how to help anyone with anything’. a nice example of “the universal within the particular”

i grew up outside a large city. around thirteen, i became vegan (sorry). when i told people around me that cows make milk after becoming pregnant, like humans, everyone told me i was very stupid and misinformed. they all thought there was zero analogy - cows just made milk.
