if you want a sense of how absurdly fast things are moving, remember when anthropic ran super bowl ads mocking openai for the chatgpt tone + ads?
well that was feb of *this year*.
so like ~7 months ago. it feels like at least 5 years ago.
i have a lot to say about these ads but holy fucking shitβ¦ this might be the most tasteful & brutal takedown of a category leader iβve ever seen. & during the fucking super bowl? insane.
usually these things almost always fall flat (see: slack βwelcomingβ microsoft teams with a fucking newspaper ad & how cringe that was), but this one lands dead center.
even normies will clock the subtlety. the capturing of chatgptβs drift in personality, tone, & vibes is absolutely unreal. almost surgical. normal ppl i know make fun of how chatgpt talks.
imo openai made themselves vulnerable here by simply trying to do so much (enterprise, codex, consumer, etc) & lacking a singular cohesive narrative other than they have 800m users. like even google is taking shots about openai being forced to run ads.
anyway iβll post more but this was an absolute master class (i have posted about how openai competitors should handle their ads play, & this is a great start). also i would not count anthropic out of the consumer race yet (they have a lot of room to grow & even potentially acquire small startups).

A girl just said she tried to get rejected 1000 times in 2025 and ended up being cast in plays, winning pageants, securing hella paid brand deals, and appearing in commercials. This is your sign to chase rejection to the point of "accidental" success. You'll be surprised.

A retired NASA engineer who had worked on the Space Shuttle program for 25 years was hired by SpaceX at age 62. He described the first week as the most disorienting experience of his professional life.
At NASA, a design change required 3 meetings, 2 committees, a review board, and 6 to 18 months of documentation. At SpaceX, his new supervisor said "if it works, build it. If it doesn't, change it by Friday."
He sat at his desk after the first day and called his wife. He told her he felt like a man who had been swimming with ankle weights for 25 years and someone just cut them off. He could move. He could decide. He could build something in the morning and test it in the afternoon. The constraint that he had accepted as the nature of aerospace engineering turned out to be the nature of bureaucracy.
Within 6 months he had contributed to more design iterations than he had completed in his last 5 years at NASA. Not because he was working harder. Because the time between having an idea and testing the idea collapsed from months to hours. The same brain. The same knowledge. A different operating system.
He described a specific moment where he proposed a modification to a Raptor engine component. At NASA, the proposal would have entered a queue. At SpaceX, the modification was machined by the end of the day and tested by the following morning. He watched his idea become a physical object in 18 hours. At NASA, 18 hours would not have been enough to schedule the first meeting to discuss whether to schedule a meeting.
He told an interviewer: "I didn't get smarter when I went to SpaceX. I got faster. The intelligence was always there. The system was in the way."
The difference between SpaceX and NASA is not talent. NASA has extraordinary talent. The difference is the time between a thought and a test. SpaceX compresses it. NASA elongates it. The same engineer produces 10x more at SpaceX than at NASA because the bottleneck was never the engineer. It was the meetings about the meetings about the work.

Intelligence must draw on memory. The mind must not simply compile data β as an algorithm now does more quickly than we can β but recall lived experiences, which contain depths of meaning that only the human soul can recognize, and connect more deeply with the goodness of these experiences. Everything that is good begins βwith the Spiritβ and thus possesses a breath, a dynamism and a sense of communion that, once experienced, are engraved upon the heart. vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/eβ¦

JUST IN: NASA says its Moon Base is running ahead of schedule, with the first element now expected to launch in December followed by near-monthly robotic missions to the lunar surface beginning in early 2027.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency expects to beat the original national-space-policy target of putting the first Moon Base elements in place by 2030.
The plan is to send infrastructure, rovers and other equipment ahead of astronauts so hardware is already operating on the surface when crews arrive.
NASA is also developing a public website that will allow people to follow construction of the lunar base as missions arrive.

Contraβs new Creative Intelligence Report is one of the most incredible websites Iβve seen - you have to check it out yourself!
Three findings stood out:
1. AI doesnβt seem to be hurting creatives' earnings: 49.1% reported earning more versus 13.9% earning less.
2. The fastest-growing AI tools mentioned in job listings for creatives were Higgsfield (25Γ), Replit (10.8Γ), and Claude (9.9Γ)
3. The most-used AI tools were ChatGPT (29.3%), Claude (27.1%), and Gemini (14.1%). Still pretty standard vs. AI design-specific tools.
Check out @contra's insanely cool report here: c87.to/creative-intelligenceβ¦

The secret to not being awkward is to never force conversation. Donβt try to come up with interesting things to say, donβt talk to people for the sake of talking, donβt voice opinions or ask questions to sound smart. Instead, notice your own curiosity and follow it. If you donβt have any, radiate comfort in your silence.

I always carry whiteboard markers in my bag.
A few days ago, at a 1517 Fund event, the break started and the room did the usual thing. Find someone, make small talk, wait for an opening to pitch.
I found an empty whiteboard instead.
So I started writing, in the middle of a garden, outdoors. Discount rates, the two-phase covenant, the auction, terminal value, competitors, the forecast engine. Five words in the middle, βINVEST IN HUMAN POTENTIAL DIRECTLYβ. Big enough to read across the lawn.
I didn't introduce myself to anyone.
By the time the break ended, 20 people had stopped. Founders, investors, recruiters, web3 developers. Nobody was being pitched. They were reading, asking, learning.
You never have to beg for attention you've made worth paying. A pitch asks people to care. The work, in the open, lets them find out they already do.
Show the work. The right people will find you in front of it.
Thank you @DStrachman for the invite, and @1517fund for hosting.

In 1991, Patagonia's catalog said: "Everything we make pollutes. Buy fewer items and buy things that last."
That level of honesty is almost unthinkable today. Patagonia can speak the truth because it is coherent inside and out.
