We just lost another screen legend today at 85 😔🕊️
Elke Sommer, the German-born Hollywood actress whose international career stretched from The Prize and A Shot in the Dark to The Muppet Show, Carry On Behind and decades of film and television, has passed away at 85.
Sommer became one of the most recognizable European stars to break into Hollywood during the 1960s. She could play sophisticated comedy opposite Peter Sellers, step into thrillers and horror, appear alongside major stars such as Paul Newman and Bob Hope, and later bring the same unmistakable presence to television and voice work, Even voicing Yzma in the German dub of The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)
Some of her most memorable roles included:
• Maria Gambrelli — A Shot in the Dark
• Yzma — The Emperor’s New Groove — German Dub
• Inger Lisa Andersen — The Prize
• Linka Karensky — The Wrecking Crew
• Cleopatra / Herself — The Muppet Show
• Professor Anna Vooshka — Carry On Behind
• Lisa Reiner — Lisa and the Devil
• Vera Clyde — And Then There Were None
• Irma Eckman — Deadlier Than the Male
• Eva Arnold — Baron Blood
• Dr. Ilse Martin — The Six Million Dollar Man
• Didi — Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!
• Paula Schultz — The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz
• Nikki Dunay — The Art of Love
• Erika Altschul — Zeppelin
• Countess Montparnasse — The Prisoner of Zenda
• Lisa Baron — The Money Trap
• Kay Bergdahl — The Oscar
• Helga — The Victors
• Isabel von Hohenstauffen — Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna
What made Sommer’s career remarkable was how easily she crossed borders, languages, and genres. A star who emerged from European cinema became a familiar face in Hollywood comedy, drama, horror, adventure, and television.
More than six decades after her rise to international fame, films like A Shot in the Dark and The Prize still preserve the elegance, humor, and screen presence that made Elke Sommer unforgettable.
Rest in peace, Elke Sommer. 🎬🕊️

Pumpkins were brought over from the Americas in the 16th century.
But before they became the Halloween stars we know and love, people carved jack-o’-lanterns from turnips and other root veg! 🥕
