Narratives about the debt crisis in Global South countries typically present it as a technical issue or the fault of “corrupt” or “incompetent” governments.
This intentionally erases colonialism in creating Global South debt, & how it is utilised as a form of neo-colonialism.

In response to the Belgian king’s reference to a “painful shared past”, a Congolese friend of mine asked what exactly had been painful for Belgium. I haven’t seen a more fitting analysis elsewhere.
“Today, let’s look towards the future,” he urged. Philippe declined to expand on his regrets, and only mentioned the colonial past, “our shared history,” in veiled terms. Leopold II, Philippe’s great great grand uncle, for more than 25 years.🤮🤮
