A stat that shouldn’t be true but is… The Nathaniel Hackett - Russell Wilson offense of 2022 averaged 73 more yds per game than this Sean Payton - Bo Nix led offense. Also separated by just 2 pts per game. Sean called 2022 ā€œone of worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFLā€

Brian has some of the most awesome interactions with coaches in these press conferences.
How do defenses determine how many men to put in the box? How much of it is about the opponent run game vs the opponent's RBs? "More people doesn't equal better run defense." Really interesting answer from Mike Macdonald

If ever I wanted a definitive take on whether the medical protocols were followed and the doctors acted appropriately, I'm glad we got it from Mad Dog. Matter settled.
"The Eagles did a horrendous job." —@MadDogUnleashed on how the Eagles handled the situation with Jalen Hurts.

I'm not a doctor - like most people out there - but have you ever signed a medical waiver for anything? A bad outcome doesn't mean anybody did anything wrong. They literally make you sign a document and spend 10 mins telling you about all the possible bad outcomes for anything you get done. To be clear - I'm not saying the doctors with Hurts did or did not treat him correctly, but the logic of 'it got worse so somebody fucked up.' is just bullshit.

Just to summarize here... Mike Silver calls out a doctor for how the Eagles have handled the Hurts thing, with clearly not even a surface-level understanding of the subject. When I suggested you might want to talk to doctors BEFORE sounding off he gets all butthurt. THEN announces he's actually taken a stab at some basic journalism and talked to a doctor, BE SURE TO TUNE IN. And I'm sure that conversation won't have been affected at all by the fact he's already called out the NFL/Eagles and now has an entrenched corner to fight. Just lazy tbh. Would have taken 10 mins to talk to someone who knows what they're talking about before you go witch-hunting.

I used to build 4th-down models for a sportsbook. We didn't care what coaches should do, only what they would do. Coaches go for it 29% of the time the model says to. Shanahan goes when it's obvious, kicks when it's less clear: 3rd most conservative since 2014. Does it pay to play it safe? ā¬‡ļø xitter.cf/katsuxbt/status/211234…
Kyle Shanahan says a 51% analytics recommendation won’t convince him to go for it because he gets one shot, not an hour at a blackjack table ā€œI don’t want to hear about it if it’s 51% of the time we should go for it.ā€ ā€œAs I always say, I’m not sitting here playing Blackjack for an hour with no one else at the table, and eventually I’ll get 51% of it. Like, I have this one try, and I have a feel for it. I’ve been doing it too long.ā€ ā€œBut what I want to know from him, when it’s not a feel, when it, no, this is 98%. We don’t even need to talk about it. So we don’t need to talk about it. Tell me when it’s that, and I’ll just do it.ā€

"I’m in Lincoln Financial Field, calling plays in to Donovan McNabb, and right in the middle of one of the calls, I get a tow truck operator down on South Street, Philadelphia, that crackles through the radio line." Just an incredible article all around. Excellent insight
For a year, @SandoNFL and I dove into what actually goes on in an NFL headset, and the vast networks that make every play possible - hidden in plain sight. Then, the best visuals team in the world made it tangible. A project unlike any you’ve seen: nytimes.com/athletic/interac…

A lot of people really need to speak to a doctor before sounding off on this topic. It's not as simple as post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Oh man, I totally forgot about this game. Great game!
Sensible Software didn't shy away from a controversial tagline for their game Cannon Fodder from 1993: "War has never been so much fun!" The dark humour is present throughout the game, but not everyone got it - some criticised its "brutality" and supposed glorification of war and killing. I never understood that notion, since most action games involve blasting through hordes of enemies and killing the bad guys, don't they? Regardless, it became one of the Amiga's most successful games ever, with a crapload of awards. Great graphics, an epic soundtrack, and excellent gameplay. A near perfect game. Did you know it was actually built on a modified Sensible Soccer engine?

YES! This is a great take on the subject! We talked about this on the show a few weeks back. You can't just treat it like poker or blackjack, cos you don't necessarily get the time for the math to work in your favor. What's that line, the market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent? Same idea. You want the information; you don't want to go with the edge lean every single time just cos it says 51%.

Btw, the one caveat to this I would have - any macro-analysis of these calls Shanahan makes vs league-wide suggests his intuition is currently calibrated to be too conservative. So, while I agree with his overall analysis of the dynamic, I think there needs to be a feedback loop there to suggest to him that he needs to dial up the aggression a tick.
