One of the very first things I do with virtually everyone I speak to as a Career Coach is asking this question. What do you want to do next? Then I count. One thousand one. One thousand two. One thousand three. And if I do not get an answer, it tells me there is indecision and someone may be looking for a change or a career pivot. We have written countless resumes for clients but rarely if ever will we take a client on that is unsure of what they want to do next. The virtual Career Direct team that I lead across the USA and several people in Africa have completed no less than 1600 career assessments and consultations. We use a tool powered by Career Direct - Living By Design that has been invaluable. It's comprised of 550 questions focused on Personality, General Interests, and Values. The initial detailed report is 36 pages. We also made enhancements this past week that makes our tool AI enabled with solid next step guidance. Globally, more than 400,000 have taken this career assessment to date. If you are unhappy in your career, your strengths are not being fully utilized, you are in an industry/job that simply does not make sense, you are "stuck" or perhaps looking to validate if the career track you are currently on still makes sense, then CONSIDER a career assessment and up to a 2 hour consultation with a certified and experienced career coach. We also use this same tool for high school and college students who are unsure of their career direction. We have countless testimonies from parents about how important this assessment has been for their sons and daughters. It's our commitment to empowering people we work with to "get to that better place" For a complimentary consultation to Optimize Your Career, please use this link: lnkd.in/ez_zsnax or call our main #: 610-274-8214. #optimizingcareers โ€“ at Kennett Square, PA

After leading 250+ senior-level and small business networking forums, I've seen one networking mistake made far to often: People get leads and even referralsโ€”and then don't follow up on them. This isn't just my observation after 15+ years as a Career Coach. Harvard Business Review published an article specifically titled Don't Make This Common Networking Mistake (9/2024), observing that a surprising number of job seekers fail to follow up with people they met and asked for advice. In another 2024 article published by the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL), authors Neil Courtis and Steve Dalton reported that, in a poll involving more than 1,000 alumni of business schools and universities, more than half (50% plus) said they had never heard back from people who had previously networked with them. It's not only a USA problem, it's a global issue to boot. These stats do not surprise me. Think about why we network. We build relationships to expand our reach and create opportunities. Someone might offer to introduce you to a hiring manager, pass along your rรฉsumรฉ, connect you with a potential customer or simply say, โ€œCall me Monday. I may be able to help you.โ€ That's a lead. Someone just opened a door for you. But when you don't follow up, there can be implications: โŒ You may lose a potential opportunity. โŒ The person who offered to help may stop sharing future leads. โŒ Your credibility and reputation can be damaged. And here's the part people sometimes miss: the next lead that person could have given you might have been much better than the first one. So when you receive a lead: โœ… Track it. โœ… Take action. โœ… Close the lead. If circumstances prevent you from following through, communicate with the person who offered to help. Don't simply disappear. Getting the lead isn't the win. Closing the lead is. One of my simplest networking rules: Until that lead is closed, it's still open. How many leads do you have open right now? I was beyond blessed to serve as the guest speaker at The Leaders of Faith Foundations' (lnkd.in/gZeeW8jR) monthly meeting this past Thursday. It gave me an opportunity to share something very personalโ€”my testimony and the incredible journey God has taken me on. I shared my story of breaking away from a cult, my shift from Corporate America, the amazing circumstances that led me to become involved with Crown Financial Ministries (crown.org/), and take a leap of faith by starting my own career coaching firm, SamNova (lnkd.in/gAQAHWZU). Along the way, God continued opening doors. I became a leader with Believers in Business (BIB) and a passionate advocate and supporter of Follower of One - Missions Reimagined (followerofone.org/) with both organizations committed to helping Christians live out their faith in the workplace. Looking back, I can see God's hand at work through so many different chapters of my lifeโ€”sometimes opening doors I never expected and other times redirecting me toward opportunities I never could have planned myself. I was truly humbled that this leadership body took the time to hear my story and learn how God has played such an important role throughout my life, career, business, and commitment to Faith & Work. But perhaps the greatest blessing came at the end. ๐Ÿ™ Prayer. The prayer support offered for me, my family, my business, and my continued commitment to Faith & Work meant more to me than I can adequately express. There is something incredibly powerful about believers coming together to encourage one another, pray for one another, and support each other in living out our faith wherever God has placed us. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the Leaders of Faith Foundation (lnkd.in/gZeeW8jR) for the invitation, fellowship, encouragement, and especially the prayers. To God be the glory for the journey so farโ€”and for whatever He has planned next! โ€“ at Kennett Square, PA

If you are looking to advance your career, in job transition or in sales, targeting a firm or organization is essential. A common mistake made when networking is to not have those targets at hand. After leading 250+ networking forums as a Career Coach, I've seen people target in many ways. One way is to say, I am seeking any type of nonprofit or any type of pharma firm or any type of small business up to $50M in revenues. Although that approach may conjure some success, it is not the most effective way to leverage a network. A much more effective way is to state, I am looking for any leads or decision makers at nonprofits such as The American Cancer Society, Phil Abundance, Pew Charitable Trust or the American Bible Society. By calling out specific names, it will result in a better response rate since people can relate to names far better than any nonprofit. I've witnessed a 75% better response rate at networking forums when people share names. I am not a fan of a sharing a very long targeted list as much as having 6-12 targets ready to go to share with others. Having a targeted name in a formal networking setting is so important, especially if given the opportunity to share them in writing on a Networking 1-Pager like is the standard during Career Professional Executives Networking Group meeting. Equally important is to have 4-5 names in head at all times for those individuals you meet with on a 1-on-1 basis. If they ask you what you are targeting, providing specific names will be far more effective than saying, any nonprofit, as any example. I expect all our clients at SamNova to target firms, whether applying for jobs in a limited capacity or doing a targeted job search within the hidden job market. Many parents have hired SamNova to help their sons and daughters not only garner an internship job but also guide them on the many Internship Doโ€™s and Donโ€™ts. Done right, it can give students real-world experience, measurable accomplishments, a stronger network, and potentially a head start on their first full-time job. Here are some of our Doโ€™s and Donโ€™ts for college internships: โœ… DO intern in your career major as early as possible. Freshman or sophomore year is greatโ€”but make it a priority during your junior and senior years. The closer the experience is to your career target, the better. โŒ DONโ€™T accept an internship without understanding the work. Look for a structured internship with a job description, defined responsibilities, and success metrics. You want to know what success looks like. โœ… DO build your LinkedIn profile BEFORE you start. Your coworkers, managers, vendors, and other professionals you meet can become part of your long-term professional network. โŒ DONโ€™T dismiss an opportunity just because the pay isn't ideal. Getting paid something is certainly better than nothing, but early in your career, relevant experience and accomplishments can have tremendous long-term value. โœ… DO be open to โ€œjob creep.โ€ If you're given opportunities outside your official job description, consider them opportunities to learn, contribute, and expand your skills. โŒ DONโ€™T constantly say, โ€œThat's not part of my job.โ€ Be willing to stretch. Go beyond the call of duty when appropriateโ€”and if an important project occasionally requires extra time, be willing to put it in. โœ… DO document your accomplishments. Create a brief monthly report for your supervisor showing what you accomplished. Whenever possible, quantify your results with numbers, percentages, dollars, time saved, projects completed, or other measurable outcomes. โŒ DONโ€™T wait months after the internship to update your rรฉsumรฉ. When the internship ends, immediately update your rรฉsumรฉ with your tangible and quantifiable accomplishments while the details are fresh. โœ… DO build relationships throughout the organization. Connect on LinkedIn with the people you actually meet and work withโ€”not just your immediate supervisor. Today's coworker could become tomorrow's hiring manager, referral source, customer, or business connection. โœ… DO ask your supervisor for an official LinkedIn recommendation. Do this near the end of a successful internship while your contributions are still fresh in their mind. The goal is to leave with: Experience. Accomplishments. Relationships. References and a stronger professional brand. Moms, Dads and students; book a consultation: lnkd.in/ez_zsnax or call our main #: 610-274-8214. #optimizingcareers โ€“ at Kennett Square, PA

One of the many mistakes in networking is surprisingly simple: Not showing up. Earlier in my career, I could have been a poster child for not showing up. I didn't like getting too far out of my comfort zone. I went to forums because I had to not because I wanted to. I spent too much time rationalizing what I was doing was always more important. But I've learned a thing or two since. Here's what I've learned after 16+ years of career and business coaching: You can't benefit from a room you're not in. Every time you don't show up, you could be missing: โœ… Meeting a person who knows the targeted hiring manager or key decision maker โœ… The introduction that leads to your next client โœ… A speaker who shares exactly what you needed to hear โœ… A new member who could become an important relationship โœ… The opportunity to help someone elseโ€”which may ultimately come back to you โœ… A one time guest that you may not see again that could of made all the difference โœ… Not getting the lead that could open a door with a firm or organization โœ… Building out your formal LinkedIn network with another connection โœ… Support someone in prayer But there is something else we don't talk about enough. What else happens when you show up: โœ…When people see you consistently, they get to know you โœ…When they get to know you, they begin to trust you โœ…When they trust you, they're more comfortable referring you โœ…If you lost your job tomorrow, people will remember you if you need help Networking isn't just about making connections. It's about being present long enough to build relationships. Of course, life happens. We all miss meetings. We all have to prioritize. When you can't attend, communicate. Let the organizers know. Stay engaged. And when appropriate, send someone in your place. Finding someone to sub for you is way easier than one may think. You never know who is going to be in that room or on that next Zoom call. THE SAMNOVA WAY Show up. Be present. Be engaged. Help others. Do it consistently. Because sometimes the difference between the opportunity you get and the opportunity you miss is simply... whether you SHOW UP. Are you running a balanced job search? One of the biggest mistakes I see job seekers make is spending too much time simply applying to posted jobs. A successful job search requires multiple strategies: โœ… Know exactly what you want to do next โœ… Leverage and use AI to strengthen your job search โœ… Build an exceptional resume & LinkedIn profile โœ… Target the right companies โœ… Apply strategically โ€” not endlessly โœ… Network before AND after applying โœ… Connect directly with hiring managers โœ… Leverage more of your LinkedIn network โœ… Engage in the Hidden Job Market โœ… Engage recruiters and industry groups โœ… Stay resilient and keep moving And one important rule: Donโ€™t slow down because you have an interview or are in the final rounds. More than one interview can lead to more than one job offer. Itโ€™s why many of our clients received multiple offers in 2025 and 2026. At SamNova, we teach and coach our clients how to do it all.
