Why do you so rarely see a good blue firework on Diwali? The copper compound behind blue breaks apart if the flame gets too hot. Red and green are far easier.

The book on the syllabus and the book in the student's bag have almost nothing to do with one another. Everyone in the system knows this. Nobody writes it down.
So I did. Thank you @SwarajyaMag.
Every physical chemistry syllabus in India lists Atkins and Levine. What students actually carry is Bahl and Tuli or photocopies of someone’s notes.
It isn’t price, and it isn’t that Indian chemists can’t write. My piece for @SwarajyaMag on why:

Read May Contain Lies by @aedmans over the Puja holidays. Why do smart people believe things that aren’t true? Usually not lack of information, he argues. We believe what we’d like to be true.

A Durga idol starts as riverbank clay and goes back to the river after Dashami. It’s dried in the sun but never fired, because fired clay can’t turn back into mud.

Gandhi's first satyagraha in India was fought over a dye.
For #GandhiJayanti, I wrote about the chemistry of indigo, the vats of Champaran, and how synthetic indigo from Germany made life harder for Bihar's indigo growers.

My recent article, on the chemistry of Chhath. Why thekua turns brown with gur and keeps for weeks, why the sun looks red at arghya, and whether arghya really gives us vitamin D.

I went in expecting to write about why arsenic filters fail. That story is already well documented.
The question I couldn't answer was simpler. When a filter works, the arsenic has to end up somewhere. In Bihar, nobody publishes where.
The loophole in India's hazardous waste rules and drinking water
#Arsenic filters remove toxic elements from drinking water but concentrate them in sludge, a new study shows. It can carry up to seven kilograms of arsenic per cubic metre. While India removes arsenic from water, what happens to that hazardous sludge in #Bihar remains missing from public records, asks Sameer Saurav in this new article.

Arsenic filters don't destroy arsenic. They move it into a sludge, 5-7 kg per cubic metre.
Where does that sludge go in Bihar? I looked. Couldn't find out.

I’m feeling genuinely grateful after attending the RARE2025 meeting (sites.google.com/view/rare20…). The experience was both insightful and inspiring, offering valuable perspectives on rare events in biology and materials. (1/n)
I had the opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds in the field and connect with peers through engaging discussions. The brainstorming session was thought-provoking and helped me develop critical thinking. (2/n)
A big thank you to the organizers @nairslab , @Jmondal_tifrh , @FergLab , @SumanPhysChem and @TarakChem for putting together such a well-structured and impactful event. Your hard work made all the difference, and I’m already looking forward to attending the next RARE meeting.
If you are attending @SoPhyC_India , please visit my poster (CP-129) on Oct 24. I have performed free energy calculation for unbinding problem. I look forward to meet you for discussions and suggestions!
I will be attending @cecamEvents @jncasr conference at MD@60. Please visit my poster (P68) on host-guest systems on February 26th (today). Looking forward to meeting you!
