In this case the whole of Europe and the USA have just replaced the wording. We have gone from " That cotton won't pick itself " to " fighting the brutal tyranny of the Russians ", The wording is different, the aim is the same, someone has to do it and it certainly won't be me or my children. This is a daily crime, a war crime yet Burnham, Von Der Leyen, Merz, Macron and Stubbe among others turn not only a blind eye but have gone from actively ignoring it to actively killing off Ukrainians by removing temporary status of Ukrainian war refugees and we all know what happens next. A flight, a Slava Ukrani badge and a " ticket to Bandera land ". All of them are monsters and have blood on their hands. But why don't they rise up ? Simple. The same species that spent 2020–2022 treating "two weeks to flatten the curve" as holy writ, then treating every subsequent pivot, boost, and contradiction as equally sacred, is now supposed to be shocked that Ukrainian men aren't storming the recruitment offices with pitchforks. Spare us the sudden outbreak of critical thinking. It was never the dominant trait. During COVID the formula was simple and effective: declare an existential threat, flood every screen with the approved experts, make non-compliance socially radioactive, and attach real penalties—jobs, travel, schooling, basic participation in society. Question the models, the origins, the changing definitions of "fully vaccinated," or the cost-benefit of locking healthy people inside while letting nursing homes become charnel houses? You were a granny-killer, a science-denier, or a useful idiot for whatever geopolitical villain was fashionable that week. Most people complied. Not because they had independently audited the serology papers, but because the social and institutional machinery made dissent expensive and conformity cheap. Herd behaviour dressed up as civic virtue. Now apply the identical machinery to a shooting war. Existential threat? Check Russian tanks and "denazification." Check. Approved experts and media? Check The same outlets that spent years calling lab leak a conspiracy now treat any discussion of Ukrainian manpower shortages, desertion rates, or the actual state of the front as Kremlin talking points. Social cost of dissent? Check. Traitor, collaborator, Russian propaganda, disinformation "why do you hate democracy?" Check. Legal and physical coercion? Check Martial law, closed borders for military-age men, street roundups, and the cheerful Western applause for "defending freedom" while looking away from the methods. The result is predictable: most people do not rise up. They evade if they can, endure if they cannot, and tell themselves the story that makes the next busification palatable. The biting part is not that Ukrainians are uniquely cowardly. It is that the same psychological and institutional toolkit works in both cases. Fear plus narrative plus punishment produces compliance. The people who lectured everyone about "trusting the science" and "doing your part" now treat conscription as an unquestionable patriotic sacrament. The people who spent years mocking "just following orders" as a Nuremberg excuse suddenly discover that following orders is noble when the order is to hold a trench. Critical thinking was always optional; what mattered was which team owned the current emergency. If the comparison offends, ask why the mechanisms look so familiar. Humans are remarkably consistent when the incentives line up. The virus version and the artillery version just used different branding.
