Perhaps lost in shuffle: Today was KC's 8th straight game without a turnover, NFL record going back to at least 1960. And it could well have been snuffed out on first play of game when Remigio fumbled KOR but had it recovered by Perine.

"After the game, Jackie Robinson came into our clubhouse & shook my hand. He said, 'You're a helluva ballplayer & you've got a great future.' I thought that was a classy gesture, one I wasn't then capable of making. I was a bad loser. What meant even more was what Jackie told the press, 'Mantle beat us. He was the difference between the two teams. They didn't miss DiMaggio .' I have to admit, I became a Jackie Robinson fan on the spot. And when I think of that World Series, his gesture is what comes to mind. Here was a player who had without doubt suffered more abuse, more taunts & more hatred than any player in the history of the game. And he had made a special effort to compliment & encourage a young white kid from Oklahoma." Mickey Mantle

This is the largest philanthropic gift made in support of these programs, as well as the largest gift made by a woman to the federation. trib.al/ODsx1A6

It wasn’t just his hitting that made him popular.
"Stan Musial had gone hitless in a Sunday DH. Heat was unbearable that day, Hell could not be much hotter than St. Louis summer day. After the game Musial walked gingerly to his car, he looked beaten down & beat up "Watch this,” Harry Caray said to a friend Sure enough, when Musial got to the car, there were a hundred kids waiting for him an autograph. Stan leaned against his hot car and signed every one." Musial at the Polo Grounds

20 years ago tonight. October 20, 2004. Four days of little or no sleep, pulverizing anxiety and consuming nothing but beer and Devil Dogs culminates in the greatest comeback in baseball history. That was a good time.

Every great reliever eventually makes Mariano Rivera's career look even crazier. Rivera allowed his third career postseason run in his 37th appearance.

A class act talking about the passing of an icon. #RIPLuisTiant
We may have taken the World Series in 1975 but Luis Tiant shut us out in Game 1 and threw another complete game victory in Game 4. He meant so much to the Red Sox organization, baseball certainly lost another icon. My condolences to his family and the Boston fans.

Wishing @JoyceKC all the best. As one of the many entrepreneurs you shined a light on during the early days of growing a business, please accept a hearty thank you from everyone @WeatherorNotInc.
Some personal news. I just called a source and said, "It's Joyce Smith with the Kansas City Star. ...Well, formerly with the Kansas City Star." I have resigned from the Star after 38.5 years. Followers know me for my Cityscape column which we launched in 1989.

An American women is the first name on the US Women’s Open Championship Trophy @PebbleBeachGolf! Corpuz was exciting to watch. Her acceptance speech was humble and showed the emotions she had kept in check while playing. Fantastic achievement! #USWomensOpen

Felt like the luckiest person in Boston, the day I scored a parking space across from the European. Still miss their pizza. It really was the best!

What a pro! At what, you ask? Pick a sport.
Imagine if prior to dominating golf, Tiger Woods was a high school hoops champion, won 3 Olympic track medals and was a legendary baseball player as a kid... That's Babe Zaharias, who 98% of modern sports fans have never heard of. So let me tell you about one of the most accomplished, prolific, remarkable athletes ever. And just so you know up top, we're dealing with an athlete who: • won an AAU hoops title • won 3 Olympic track medals • pitched against Major Leaguers • won 10 LPGA majors & 82 tournaments Let's start: Babe Didrikson. Born 1911. Instant athlete. As a kid, prefers to play against boys because they're stronger & faster. Earns the nickname "Babe" after hitting 5 homers in a baseball game. “I don’t see any point in playing...if you don’t win,” she says. And she wins... She dominates softball, but loves basketball. In high school she becomes a 2x All-American in Texas. Leads her team to 3 undefeated seasons. Scores 76 points in a game once. 1931. The Babe wins an AAU hoops title... While she's good at hoops, she's otherworldly at track & field... July 16, 1932: her masterpiece. She competes as a team of one in the amateur championships: Wins 5 of 8 events. In 3 hours. Won the team event herself and is Olympic bound... 1932 Olympics - Los Angeles Babe becomes the only track & field athlete (men or women) to win a medal running, throwing & jumping. Gold - 80m hurdles Gold - javelin throw Silver - high jump She sets 4 world records & becomes an international superstar... Babe is 22 years old. Famous. Loves challenges... Already has the record for longest baseball throw by a woman (to this day). She pitches in exhibition games against MLB players: In one inning she gives up a walk and no hits to the Dodgers. Now onto her best sport... 1935. Babe begins to play golf. She's good... but wants to be great. Practices 10 hours a day until her hands were bloodied according to the NY Times. She wins amateur tournaments. She turns pro. She wins pro tournaments. She helps found the LPGA tour... The Babe has swagger. She enters locker rooms shouting: “The Babe’s here! Who is going to finish second?” Between 1947-48, she wins 14 tournaments in a row. She wins 10 LPGA Majors in 15 years. Becomes a HOFer & the perhaps the greatest female athlete ever... If you're impressed, and you should be, share this post... And if you enjoy reading about fascinating people follow me @Jon_Finkel for more.

Loved my time in Torres del Paine for its majestic peaks, people, glaciers and more. These guys are a little heartier than me. Any way you travel #Patagonia, this area is a must.

Thanks to @roadscholarorg I know first hand that this is exactly how it looks. The glacial silt makes the water that color. Go see it for yourself! Thanks Ann for the memory.
